Look for run out stock on last years models or the buy and sell - though you'll probably be looking closer to $2k for stuff in really good knick

It is doable though

Well doable in a metro area if you buy second hand privately. I was getting 07 gear in 08 for 1/3 the price. I guess 07 gear is a couple of years old in 08 due to the release times but you can pick up stuff that has been hardly used.

Go second hand.

Just be careful of the "too good to be true" prices as they will be really old and/or stolen gear

great way to start off nemo.. here is an example. a switchblade 3 12 mtr for about $900. make that your best kite because its the one you will use the most..then spend the rest on a 8 mtr switchblade 2 or 3.. a few good kites that seem to have flooded the market and be going a bit cheaper are the cab switchblades.. SS revs..best warroo.. blade beast.. brands like ozone and Fone IMO always seem a little overpriced.. good luck.. and ignore all the red thumbs this post will get

Funny thing I seem to notice is that people skimp on the kites and then are happy to pay top $$ ($600+) for a 2nd hand Board.

The answer here is simple if you are on a budget- if you are after waves then use an old trashed surfboard and if you are after flat water just get an old (like 4-5 years) board. Kites have changed heaps in the last 5 years but there have been really good twin tips around forever which I reckon you could pick up for $200-$300 max, esp from tose kiters who have had gear in the shed for 3-4 years.

Sure the new gear is better but if you are on a budget there are now real answers.

I was in a shop the other day and while I was there they sold an 07 Rebel (I think it was 12m) brand new for $600.
If you want cheap just go for 2 years old....... but no older as you then on potentially average gear.

A 1 kite quiver will cover 75% of your sailing, & more as you gain experience. Go a bit on the smallish side. With a TT for the top end & a old surfboard for the bottom end. As you get better you'd always be winging about the slow turning speed of your big kite anyway. Then you can afford the best.

Another option, get 1 reasonable 2nd hand set up as your light wind kite, and then a new kite, kite only, as your main kite. I know Griffin sell "kite only". I've heard only good reports of them.

Either way you benefit from the performance, safety and reliability of the latest gear. Don't buy gear more than a few years old, you'll learn slower, hurt yourself more & have more frustrations with repairs and with untangling lines after a swim to shore. The newer gear is just that much better!
Have FUN

That's a good point COL, I started with one kite for a season and then got another for windier days later. I absolutely hammered my kite while learning... something to keep in mind.

Two brand new 2008 Naish alliance kites with one bar and pump for $1999 bit above your budget but its worth the bit extra to have the warranty.

Well doable. I am going to sell my 2007 Rebels 9/12m for way less than $1500
