As it says, i found out the hard way my recon activation ball was jammed! now when u are learning, having a nice safety system like the recon is piece of mind, untill it doesnt activate when u are being "flown" along the water like a surface-to-air missle!

Now, my question is... "is this a common thing with the 2004 RECON bar?" the little red ball (activation ball) is catching somehow, i think on the top of the black sliding area for the bar.

Its kinda hard to explain without pictures, but basically it means the ball cant be pulled down to release the system, and i have to activate it by the lil string from the ball to the recon sleave.

Has anyone modified the activation system, or had the same problem? I'd like to fix this before my next session.

Thanks for any help in advance,

Sheppo..

AFAIK this would make it FOUR MAJOR KITE MANUFACTURERS that have sold less than adequate safety equipment this season!!! How many injuries as a result?... who'd know!

Wipika (wrong bridle length on Matrix 5th lines),
SlingShot (Surefire speaderbars that explode),
Flexifoil (product recalls on Strike and Storm II chicken-loops), and now possibly...
Cabrinha (jamming Recon bars)
Feel free to add any I've missed.

Obviously there needs to be some type of World standard quality assurance regime adopted by the manufacturers, ie. ISO9000.

Or, perhaps, a safety/quality endorsement issued by the IKO when an applicant manufacturers' gear passes their testing. This would be a good revenue and PR avenue for the IKO. ( What do you reckon of this idea Kitehard?... do you have ya' finger on this pulse? )

the RECON has 2 functions
1) relaunch system
2) depower aka oh **** ball you pull (on centre line) to ditch the power of the kite

which one are you taking about? The depower system should be 100% reliable. If it aint, you better get it changed at a cabrinha shop.

if it is the relaunch system, for 2004 kites you have to pull on either relaunch balls and give it a hard jerk, then only will the bullet pop out of the battern to activate the relaunch. All the pulling of the ball is no use. Pull it a few times and give it a hard tug

ok, its the 2004 Gen 1 (classic) recon control bar, and its the depower function (red ball u pull when u go OH S**T!) thats giving me grief. i should have been a little more specific.

anyways i think i may have solved it, i adjusted the bowline (knot 3cm above the red ball, so that it wouldnt let the black sliding section move down to allow the ball to lock onto the top of it.

i also made up a "recon-tester" that i can attach all 4 lines onto, and then pull the recon, with the help of some shock-cord the front lines will extend.

thanks for the replies,

Sheppo..

p.s. does anyone put like WD40 or silicon spray on the sliding part where the control bar slides on, and the powerlock? i want to keep the system sliding effortlesly, and let the red ball slide down easily for when i do activate the immediate de-power.

Use Silicon, WD40 is bad for the environment and it also gets on everything. Silicon is a dry lubricant.
