Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone here likes 2:1 bar configuration? Everyone I've spoken to at the beach hates 2:1 - my personal experience with my 12 metre 07 naish boxer is I'll never fly the kite with 2:1 config again - it's a shocker - way too much bar pressure, very hard to turn - so much bar pressure the bar has been weakened somewhat on the ends where the back lines connect. 2:1 after 15 minutes of flying your hands hurt. Now I fly it with the smart bar upgrade which gives that needed extra depower adjustment and it's great. It's the kite I learned on and I didn't know better until I flew other people's kites and when they flew mine they hated it. As soon as I switched I could stay out for twice as long without the grief.

I see a lot of brands selling 2:1 config bars with their kites so I was wondering what other people's experiences are with other brands? I was talking to a guy at the beach the other day - he was flying a cabrihna (I think) and was buggered - same deal his kite is a shocker to turn and wears him out.

Cheers

My mate also has a Naish Boxer and uses the 1:1 config. like you sed the 2:1 has massive bar pressure and is a shocker in all aspects. the brands sell the 2:1 config bars probs just so if people like it they can use it. there are really simple ways of changing from 2:1 and 1:1 with some of the newer bars, takes seconds, think they use clips.

I have a Cabrinha Revolver 11m and I've only ever used it in 2:1 mode... Never actually thought to change it to 1:1 cuz I just put the extra bits in the cupboard and forgot about em! The bar pressure is decent in 2:1, but coming from a wakeboarding background it is more gentle on the hands than the constant drag of a wake boat! Suppose I should try it though, never know, I might like it more? Shouldnt 1:1 make the kite LESS responsive rather than MORE because you have to move the bar twice as far to do the same thing??

Yep you're right you will have to move the bar more but it's worth a try - the boxer I fly turns quick enough 1:1 - 2:1 was too twitchy - the guy I bought it from in the kite shop reckoned it wouldn't take long for me to change to 1:1. He was right. Don't forget you lose a bit of efficiency every time you put a rope through a pulley so those pulleys on your bar will make you work more. 'Specially if they've got a gut full of sand.

You'll have less de-power if you change so if you want to try do so when the winds a bit lighter.

Like Glenno I learn't on naish boxer 2:1 and it wasn't until I had to buy a new bar and lines that I tried it on 1:1. 2:1 does have loads more bar pressure but when I had it at 1:1 the kite wasn't fully depowering. I swapped back to 2:1 for safety and control. Been thinking its time to go 1:1 again.

Yeah I'm a whoose - but if it means I can be out on the water for 4 or 5 hours rather than 3 or 2 I'll fly with 1:1 any day.

Mate get the smart bar upgrade - heaps more depower - I just set my kite lines fully powered on the kite end and depower on the bar these days. Doesn't matter how windy. Pretty exxy though $140 for the kit. Depower line is on the chicken loop below the bar and none of that crap above the bar - much better quick release too

Hey Glenno
Did you manage to get out last night?? So frustrating that we've only had offshore winds on the weekends. Bloody work on all the good days!!! Typical!!!

Hi Foot,

Bloody hell that wind speed instrument at Low head is a bit out! It was saying 12-15 knots but that turned out to be 5-8. I went to Low head tuesday and no go and today I went to Greens beach - max 8 knots. Have been having a few gap days at college.

I'll be here at my crappy spot at beauty point on the weekend for the s'wlys - I went out last wednesday and had a pretty good session. Pretty gusty but great fun. Your 9 would be good on saturday.

Cheers

i rode a cabrinha omega 2:1 learning, and rode like that for about 5 months, changed it on the beach to 1:1 one day, and i found it wasnt as snappy as 2:1. i ride it 1:1 and dont think il change it back.
cheers

I also have the Cabrinah omega. Have been surfing 2:1, and just a bit over a week ago changed it to 1:1. Haven't been out with it yet but flew a mates Crossbow last week with 1:1 and it felt heaps different. Kite turned slower. Kept stacking all of the jumps.

I'm keen to give it a go, but also hesitant because 2:1 has more depower. Meaning that I can still go out in the hefty winds—I only have 1 kite—and fly.
