Burning Money this season

$3000 up in smoke
has anyone here added up how much they burn up each season in cash on kites.

Looking at the 2nd hand market seems to show most guys are getting out of their 2006 bows for at least 1/2 price of what they paid, over a 3 kite quiver this would add up to at least $3000 dollars.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Am I missing something here?????

or is that what we should budget to spend on kites annually to keep a new quiver????

definitely missing something...

my net spend was more like $450, and that's working with a half-life loss on Frankenkite.

would be nice to have flash shiney gear but, hey, gear that works is better than anything I don't have.

I think you are making all this up !

Firstly, most Bow owners have two at the most. You can get by with one!
Secondly,its YOUR choice to upgrade.

You could get ONE 12 m Bow,and use it for two seasons, then sell it.

Where do you get the "most guys" from?

I just checked the for sale section and there is only two or three Bows for sale !

Unless you have plenty of money ,and then you get to pees off all the people that are SO worried about what other people are flying !

Can't they see they have a problem ?

They must drive around upset about the expensive carsthat others have.

They must worry about people that buy Levis, when you can get jeans for a fith of the price at the discount store.

if you are spending $3k every season then you are either:

a) a "latest & greatest" tragic
b) a noob who destroys gear far to often

people grow out of being a "B", but I have no sympathy for the "A" folks - it's because of people like them that kite reatailers belive they can continue to charge insane prices for kites...

<here endeth the rant>

Hmmmmm... most of the posts here seem to be missing the point.

If you hang onto your kites for more than one season in the current kite scene they are worth nothing.

eg try selling your old 2005 C-kite at the moment, and you will need to pay someone to take it!!!, same will happen when 2007 Bows are out soon.

$3000 has been calculated assuming the average user has 3 sized kites over the normal Oz summer/winter. 2 Bow kites will not cover the full season here in Sydney.

Westerlies. you will need an 8m,
Normal NE you will need a 12m
Those 8 to 10 knots SE winds only a 16M plus kite will get you on the water.

Anyhow, just an observation , I am very happy with my current kites.

wouldnt the guys in group A that are selling their first season kites to the guys in group B (the noobs) or anyone else for that matter who cant afford a new kite. of course its easy to say “well they cant afford a new kite because the group A are helping the kite companies keep inflated (no pun intended) prices”. As I said - that’s easy to say but its way more complicated than pointing to people that buy new kites every year. Besides I don’t know anyone except the kite shops staff (guys that use the gear they sell) or kite shops/schools that are selling the past seasons demo/school kites, that might be able to do that and maybe that was the impetus of this thread to begin with. Who knows.

Kite companies sell at a market price that they think is a balance of affordability and profitability , inovative improved product they have designed also works into that equation as well as several other factors. Sure - if no one was buying new kites they would have to reduce the price to get the stock out and then people who couldn’t afford the higher price could buy the product, then sell their second hand kites to group B (or still those that cant afford) for even less or perhaps for nothing because of the second hand market being flooded , that leads back to affordability of the new kite. . Remember the laws of Supply and Demand. this goes some way to answering the very first post too, at least in a logical context.

I go against both groups as I bought two new kites this season (as I could afford them - tut tut) and I am a noob that’s yet to wreck either of them or for that matter interested in selling either of them.

here endeth my short explanation of econimics
