Dude i think they are actually attracting bigger predators. Something was biting my foil the other day, i cld feel it having a few bites at it while i was foiling.

I also sliced a Barra last week but had nowhere to put it and carry home plus there was a load of blood so i decided to leave the scene

How big is that kite? Does it come with its own postcode?

Didn't think 5knots could lift any kite.

Allowing a very generous 3 times the wind speed for board speed, you shouldn't be doing more than 15 knots.

It looked like you were somewhere in the region of 15 knots.

not sure about speed as I didn't take my fon to GPS, probably should have to get rescued in likely case of crashing kite in middle of bay.

15knts is most likely in the ballpark. In these marginal conditions you can almost go faster upwind than on a reach and downwind. The Chrono likes being leaned against.

The hardest thing is changing direction as you loose apparent speed which increases the risk of line slack.

I'm 95kg and on 19m edge with 30m lines I was foiling on perfectly flat water 2 weeks ago in 5 to 10 knots and dropped out to 3knots to 8knots of wind for the last 15 minutes - If I dropped a tack or gybe the kite would fall immediately from sky and only way to save it was to kite loop kite to save it and pump kite back up to 12 o'clock and prey for another small gust - the only reason kite was falling out of sky was the weight of the 19m was heaver than lift from airflow over kite. - when up foiling I was going up wind easy at 12/15knots and down wind on gusts 18/ 20 easy in-fact on a couple of runs I was ****ting myself as I was going super deep and very fast. 3 kiter guys were on shore watching me for 3/4 hour on dusk and could not believe I was having such a blast and were amazed - the water was totally glassy at the end of session & I was still powered on foil to I stepped off at beach -

IMO on a 18m foil this would have been sublime kiting country as the very light foil would just keep flying and not fall out of the sky. A 19m edge will fly perfectly all day overhead in 5knots but if fly to 45degrees it will fall out of sky unless you kite loop it back up to 12 o'clock

P.S only attempt in shallow ish water on a lake or river when its not to far to swim in if you drop kite in the water.

P.P.S Can,t say I'm a huge fan of foiling yet - but the challenge is to learn how to ride this farken thing drives me on

How does going upwind on a foil work? I wouldnt think there'd be enough rail in the water to get a good enough edge.

Is it hard work/takes ages to learn, or pretty easy to do?

On the race boards we running 3 x +40cm fins on our boards and do pretty well upwind.
Then a foil comes screaming past doing twice the speed and at a much greater upwind angle, unreal how efficient they are!!
Head down to Melville the foil fleet is growing steadily

you fully right. 5knts is that little wind that you cannot fly a kite standing on beach not even a superb foil kite like the Chrono. To make it work you have to be moving and that quickly, double the windspeed at least.
That day it wouldn't have been possible on a twin tip. So yea if 5knts go fishing or lawn mowing for sure.

However, i wanted to demonstrate that it is possible mainly due to the amazing apparent speed the Chrono creates.

Once you got 7-8knts and more with a kite like the Chrono you can be fully moving and having fun no doubt. 6knts is the cut off and 5 knots or less is not really happening, not for long anyways
