Another newbie question.....with a 5th line rig, does the 5th line get hooked to your harness? (Liquid Force M-80) and can someone explain for the dummies the self landing procedure with a 5th line. I understand that once you have kite close to the ground that you just let go the control bar. Do I then grab a single rear line (closest to bar or do I grab 5th line and follow up to kite and put sand on LE.

GOB,

Thanks....that answered some questions....i.e. grabbing nearest brake line.....but a couple other present themselves....I know it is very basic/stupid questions but....once the kite is on the ground after letting go of the control bar, do I unhook 5th line while securing kite or leave it attached in case it gets hit by a gust while moving towards it....does this make for potential tangles?

hey mate, there are no stupid questions, if you dont ask you wont get. there are 2 schools of thought on that, one is disconnect and make your way up the 5th line keeping your feet clear and not wrapping any lines around your hand make your way slowly to the kite, personally i would only try this on light wind days
the other thought is stay hooked into your safety do same as above but if the kite takes off it will only go so far, this is the much safer option just remeber to walk beside your lines on the windward side. if you lose grip on the kite you dont want any lines around your feet or fingers. the key here is to not rush, take your time and itll be fine!! in regards to tangles once you have secured your kite run your bar away from the kite the full length and it should pull the lines all back into place with no tangles. the second method is by far the safest for others on the beach, hope this helps.

In strong winds, once you have your kite on the 5th line, bury your kiteboard in the sand and tie the 5th line to the handle of the board. That way the board acts as an anchor for the kite. You can then safely hand over hand up the 5th to get to the kite.

Thanks for both above tips.....upwind of lines at all times....and stay connected to 5th line or attach to sand anchored board.....avoid leaving 5th line loose....Question 2....can I tune/rig the 5th line correctly without attaching it to the kite?....I heard that you can check line lengths by placing screwdriver through ends and then pulling bar out to make sure all are even....can you use this to get the 5th line legth correct?....or does it need to be connected to kite?

Ummm....don't worry....just realized that the 5th line bridle connects to LE.....nowhere near other attachment points therefore will need to tune while rigged to kite....

hey rokdok,
its important to tune your 5th line right, it depends ont the kite on how vital it is to help it fly right, the best bet is to first attach all lines to a fixed point, put you harness on and lean back on you centers, with the trim strap at full power pull bar in when the bar is about 1 inch from the end(closest to you) all lines should be equal length and tension. the 5th line can be up to 2cm shorter and you can also just put the kite up in the air and repeat process with pulling bar in and the 5th line should just go taught, when you let bar out the 5th line should be sagging just a bit
