I've seen worse.

Personally this looks a bit dodgy but not as bad as it could be - they are not standing 3 feet from a field full of caravans. I guess what makes it seem really dumb is that it's clearly too windy to use the kite for kiteboarding, so they are simply launching it for the sake of filming themselves doing it.

In short:yes they are being dumb, but then all launches can go wrong.

dito what stnkygoat said.

I think we've all done something similar to this. I know that whenever it's hell windy outside in ACT, I always get an urge to put a big kite up on an oval. Once, in about 25knots, I put my 9m up on an oval and had a mate hanging onto my harness with the grab strap - I was floating like this guy when all of a sudden the grab strap broke (Ocean Rodeo Session harness). I went flying for about 30m before luckily landing safely.

I won't ever do it again though.

A wake boarder died in Airlie Beach doing that. Decided to learn to fly his kite without instruction in a park and tied himself to a goal post with a long rope for security.

Needless to say kite lifted him to his timely death, just another stain on the grass, hmmm ..... blood and bone are supposed to be good for the lawn.

Darwins theory of evolution in full effect

There is always a dumb ass for every windy day and every day of the week, some just get lucky. I reckon Darwin will catch up with most of em sooner or later.

Good winds,
