How much is the kitesurfing industry worth? How big are the profits made by companies like cabrinha, north, slingshot etc. and who owns them?

After reading that Core online magazine, I dont reckon The BEST owner needed to start a company anyway.

"after my first lesson I straight away bought 5 kites and 2 boards" he says somethin like that.

Me thinks daddy might have helped out a bit. Does any american college movies come to mind

Well he was a hotshot Wall street broker for a bit, could have earned his money himself perhaps.

Less than the oil and gas industry, and less than the mining industry, for a start.

That's right, a chap called Alex does, and Shannon just has his name on the company and helps R&D all the kites. Some sort of partnership.

my limited understanding and knowledge is that the windsurfing companies are behind some kite brands (Starboard / Airush), Liquid Force was big into wakeboarding while some others were already into parachutes / paragliding (Flexifoil), or sail making.

on that same theme:
Neil Pryde are the backers of Cabrinha
North have been into sailing for many years
Naish - the same

Wiki states that there were an estimated 200 000 kiteboarders in 06. If you say the average kiteboarder spends $1000 a year including holidays (more, less???? who knows??), then the entire industry would be worth $200 000 000 per year. That surprises me, my logic may be incorrect. Go figure

And what would they be? To get free kites customised for every single rider? Yeah good luck with that. I reckon there are enough different kitebrands out there for you to be able to find the one you like the best.

And what are the needs of a kiter anyway? I thought it was quality, durability, performance. I'm convinced there are HEAPS of kites out there today that fullfill all those criterias

Takoon are owned by Bic.

I am very curious about the other companies.

You have to think that most of the other kite companies have some large financial backing. Developing product and getting it into production must be extremely expensive. Even making your own kites just cutting and sewing a prototype would cost well over $1000 when you include materials, equipment and labour.

Thats what Best Kiteboarding do. Check out their forrum. As the lead up to the new season, they give the customers the opportunity to have their say on colour, design, Bars, etc.

Feedback is a big deal for the company and they listen to what people say. Of course they cant make a different model for everybody, but they do listen to the majority.

Check it out

Most companies have investors.

Creating a kite company would be a massive deal. just comming up with a couple of kites form a China factory doesnt make a brand.

I have seen what Best Kiteboarding do at one of there testing areas in WA. There are literally prototype kites everywhere. They may go through 10 x 9mtr kites before they are happy. This is R&D, this is what we pay our money for at Retail price. To get gear that is not just good, but the Best.

I have spoken to one of the testers for North as well, and they have the same type of thing happening. 2009 testing is well underway and 2010 is already been planned. these companies are onto it and they are trying their hardest to be the better company.

Just read in the gear reviews section that about 130 000 kites were sold last year from all manufacturers - these are from Alex Shogren, founder of Best

2007
Kites sold worldwide +/- 130,000

Market share in terms of number of kites sold
Best 22%
Cabrinha 18%
North 12%
Naish and Slingshot +/- 8%

The rest make up 40%, none of which have more than approx. 4%, except Takoon with approx. 5%.

So, if kites retail at an average of $1800, then the kite industry alone is worth $234 million. Not to mention boards, harnesses, spares and holidays.

When i win powerball i'm gonna buy as many kites as i can, be unemployed (cos it's cool be be on da dole) and move to WAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!

And for the record I reckon Robby Naish is rollin in it... and despite the fact that i think kites are way too expensive... Robby is da man!!!

And shannon is da man for halving the price of kites... Robby, Flash, Shannon, Dre all kickass for visiting the most underrated country in the world for kitesurfing.

May massive amounts of $$$$$$$$ be given to them.... booooyaaaaa!!!!

That's right arsa

With the 08 Yarga BEST listened to their customers who were after a dedicated freestyle c kite... now all i have to do is get my filthy mits on one.

There is a reason why BEST have a 22% market share... cos they listen to their customers.

PS: Yes Shannon is an OZZIE.. met him 2 years ago at Shakers (In Auckland near Orewa) and then at Muriwai (akl west coast)... damn good kiter.

Believe it or not I was never banned from seabreeze. I've been banned from kiteforum.co.nz (twice) and nzkiteboarding.com (for about a week) but somehow i managed to not piss too many people off on here... and Laurie understands my warped ideas so it seems... and anyway i'm a good boy now... most of the time
