Hi there,

I am living in Cabarete in the Dominican Republic. Off course this is one of the best spots in the world regarding kitesurfing. To get a way for a while I am planing to make a trip to Australia for 4 months and are looking for some info.

The plan is to drive from Sydney to Perth and a little bit North. I am planning to leave in September.
What are the spots I def. have to go to?
looking for some nice wavespots.

What's the best way to buy an old campervan in Sydney

Plenty of nice sandy beaches along the southcoast?

Are there any local rules wich we have to follow? Like kitesurf zones, regulations etc?

And off course the most important question; What;s up with the wind in that periode of the year?

Thanks guys, Ybo

hey mate

my plan would be to arrive melbourne, get a van and drive up the east coast stopping off to kite along the way until you reach the sunshine coast, spread it over 2 months

then fly to perth and do the same there...

i dont think the sydney to perth stretch is ideal for maximum kite time.
if you can delay the trip 2 or 3 months you will get better wind i think.

Bring your rubber with your. September can still be pretty damn cold. You can hire some snow skis and get some spring snow sking in. I take the kids every year on the 3rd Sept for a week and we got 50cm of snow while we were there. The water will be very cold down south coast 16-17 degrees. The wind can blow cold too.

For the East Coast & Sydney area you would be much wiser to wait a few months if your interested in kiting/sailing etc. Our summer, Dec throught to March are best for the "trade winds", N.E. winds, typically cross shore/ cross on shore, on most east coast beaches.

Aussi is a big place, you could take a year to get around, especially if you want to hang at places and check out the local scene.

Check out www.bom.gov.au its the meterology web site, they probably have weather conditions for the places your interested in at that time of the year.

As for a camper, check out www.carpoint.com.au ?? or www.tradingpost.com.au

Also there are guys that will sellyou cars with guaranteed by backs etc. You may be better to buy an old 4WD so you can get down on some beach tracks and camp instead of a camper van and having to stick to the roads. thats what i'd do. there are good camping grounds virtually on every beachtown all the way along the coast and many free camping grounds.

Thanks for all the info;

I understand that it can be pretty chilly in the South of Australia in September?
I don't have a wetsuit anymore since I live in Cabarete and left mine in the Netherlands were I used to live before. I am not intending to use it anymore

Maybe it's an option to fly to Darwin, buy a vehicle there and drive South during the time we are there. Also we would like to see a bit of the inland.

So what we don't want is;
- crowds of 18 year old backpackers
- Lot's of tourists (we rent out appartments to surfers and kitesurfers and live in a toeristic place all year)

What we want is;
Off course some wind
Nice wavespots
Camp outside most of the time
my girlfriend would like to see some animals. I know there a lot of them on the forum but real animals like crocs, kangaroos etc.
See some nice nature
Spend some time with locals. Meet relaxed people.

It's not really an option to delay our trip since this periode is kind of low season here in Cabarete.

What do you guys think...

G'day Hooked Dr,

My advice would be to fly to Brisbane buy a campervan then travel north as far as Cairns. In september when you arrive the water in in Queensland is fairly warm then spend a month - 8wks driving down the east coast from Cairns to Melbourne. This drive will see you pass through some fantastic areas and beaches Sunshine coast in QLD, Northern New South Wales, pass through Sydney on to Southern New South Wales / North Eastern Victoria Places sush as Eden, Foster, Merimbula and Pambula are a must see for beautiful beaches and importantly kiting. By this time the Victorian waters have warmed if just a little perhaps 17 deg in the water Then travel on to Melbourne from here you could do two things
1) Fly to Perth.
2) Drive to Perth ( it is a very long way not so bad for Aussies as we are used to driving long distances ) however being from the Netherlands you should consider that it is roughly about the same as driving from Amsterdam to Moscow and back again. There are a lot of pristine untouched beaches and some of the best landscapes in the world on this drive. However I am not sure that kiting would be recommended as the beaches are very very isolated. many require a 4wd to get to, are quite sharky ( Cactus springs to mind )and there is not much chance of seeing other kiters. A few surfers not so many kiters.

Either way once you get to Perth. There are too many places to even try to list for kiting, you would want to spend at least 2 month travelling the coast and you will most likely meet a huge kiting community over here who will be able to point you in the direction of some of the less well known spots ( this forum is probably not the best place to begin listing them )

Either way you are guaranteed of getting some very good sessions throuought you trip. Just remember this is a huge country and you could easily spend a 2 years travelling the coast and still not see anything. My rule of thumb for driving our coasts has been
" Kite or Surf when you can " drive when you cant.

Thanks Harry

Maybe you can provide some wind with your magic stick?
Driving from Melbourne to Perth is probably a little bit too much (back and forward to Moskou is indeed a little bit too much for our Dutch and Caribbean standards...). Flying there is also no option since we don't want to buy a campervan two times (and renting and buying is also a bit too much). How about driving from Darwin to Perth? Worth while to see something and get some time on the water? Or Maybe better to fly to Perth and travel from there back and forward on the coast? Anyway, the east coast sound great, but the surrounding around Perth sounds better. Because of the temperature and most of all because we have the idea that most tourists go to the east coast (we are that kind of people that never want to do what the rest does ). Or am I wrong, is the east coast not that touristy and more beautiful than the west coast? And how about the wind and waves, which side of the 'island' would be better?

Thanks.
