Hey all,

I am thinking of applying for a job in Melbourne, but before I do, I would like to know the kite conditions :)

The company is based in Dandenong South. On google maps, that looks like the closest place is Aspendale. From my searches, it looks like it is an OK location. How often could I expect to kite in the summer? Anything in winter?

Also, apart from kitesurfing, how is it too live? I'm more into city/inner city living, don't really like suburbs at all. I like the Newtown/Surry Hills kinda lifestyle if you know Sydney at all. I'm willing to live up to 40 minutes away from the work location, but no more than 20 minutes from kiting (got my priorities straight!!!). I am not familiar with the different areas of Melbourne at all. So if anyone has any info that would be great.

Cheers,
Tom

There are plenty of spots along that coastline, hampton has a good spot, ricketts point is another good one, etc. You could probably get away with living 5 minutes from the beach and 30 minutes from work. I haven't checked out the house pricing or rentals that far up but I'm pretty sure you could get something reasonable.

You generally want to live close to work AND kiting for one reason...its light until 8:30+ in summer and you can kite until at least 8PM. That means the closer your work is to the beach, the quicker you can get there for an after work kite.

doveton or noble park are good places to base yourself if you are working in dandy south, great lifestyle, friendly people, and lots of culture.

Braeside or Keysborough would be perfect for you to live in, close to work and close to some great kiting beaches. I'm from the Bonbeach are and we kite almost every afternoon in summer( til 9pm somtimes) and at least once a week in winter( nearly). The beaches are great and people are friendly down this way. If your the city kinda guy you might look at living in bentleigh or brighton that way your 40mins from work, 25mins to the city and 20 mins from almost any good kiting area.
Hope this healps.
Cheers.

Look at Elwood/Ripponlea as well, 5 mins from the bay (arvo kiting every day), 20 mins from CBD and probably about 30-40 mins from Dandenong.

Tmiddled. I would look at somewhere around Richmond/Hawthorn, if your income allows it. If you are earning better money I would be looking at Prahran, South Yarra or Windsor (These areas will give you a better inner city life than just about anything in Sydney [flame suit on]). You are close to everything, good inner city living in these areas! You can catch a tram to St Kilda beach and its easy to get on the Monash Freeway/ Princes Highway to Dandenong (30 minutes, and you are driving out of town, so against the peak flow) and its a 10 minute drive to the beach. I would even suggest that you could live in St Kilda itself, the Princes Highway starts there and it's no more than 40 minutes drive. You will get the best of everything then! - walk to the beach! awesome bars and restaurants, apart from the standard of the beach itself, kicks over anything Sydney has to offer!
