I was searching the site for info on Couran Cove area on Sth Straddy cuz Im heading there this weekend.. and I spotted a post where Pauly Jackson said this...

"The Gold Coast is a Bathing Reserve for the full length of the Coast with the following areas excluded:

Currumbin Alley and 100m North and South of the Alley. (exculding the estuary)
Tallebudgera Creek 100m North and South of the Creek
South Stradbroke Is up to 200m South of Couran Cove. "

Been around 4-5 months since a kite and Im feeling better, so I'm in dire need of one. Becuase I dont know the area of straddy veryyyy well at all, I was just wondering does that rule out Couran Cove all together!? Or is that from the Gold Coast (ie Spit) up to 200m before (south) couran cove!??

cheers fellas

The western side (broadwater) I'd say would be a no go - very little launching area, heaps of tourists & boats/paraflyers. But I'm sure you could kite on the eastern side in the surf. Just keep well away from the flags (if they have any this time of year).

I got married on the beach at Couran Cove around this time of year. Didn't kite then, but would be a good spot. Looking back there was a 20kt NNE blowing. Made landing the chopper we arrived in for the ceremony tricky and plenty of guests had a nice blasting

But there is really no one there on the beach side except right at the resort itself, and that takes up 200m of the 20km beach - you will have no problems finding open beach and water to kite, and as long as you are a reasonable distance from the flags the lifeguards are unlikely to hassle you. Forget the bayside though.

hope you can ride a pushy 2km to the beach side with your gear on your back though :)

hey lizzy,

Gonna be holwing NE so you will only be able to kite the open ocean side. No launching beach on the broadwater side of couran resort.
You could always 4wd along beach up to the pin aswell.

Have fun and enjoy the NE'sters. Your ok to kite anywhere in the broadwater, head over to the ocean there's NO swell anyway, its like a lake.

There's so much talk in the forum who do you believe is my question. Best is to approach the Surf Life Saver on duty and see if there are any restrictions in the area. They will be aware of any regulations in place (if any). That way, you are like 1/. kiting with their approval, 2/. They know of your activity and will keep an eye on you if you ever need help. Just remember to stay well clear of flags and other beach/water users. Give yourself at least 50m clear in your killzone. If we dont cause nuissance/concerns to others, they are not going to complain about us.
