Hello,

I'm traveling to Adelaide next week from Europe (Denmark) for 2 weeks and then to Magaret River (Perth) for another 2 weeks, but not sure if I should bring my kite-gear (+ 2 kids and a wife). What's the wind season like in your summer at these two destinations?

What size kites would i need for wave surfing to get most time on the water (I usually prefers to go with my 7m2 Nash Park - but we dont have swell in denmark, so we need strong wing to get waves), or would i need to bring my 12m2 to make sure to get some time on the water??.

In adelaide - do you get swell around there or do i need to drive down south (like Victor Harbor) to get waves?

If i dont bring my gear, can I rent it?

Cheers Jens

Hi Mate

yeah i can vouch for Western Austalia....Margs you'll get a seabreeze most days in summer between 15-20 knots with the odd 20-25 knot day thrown in. If you come up to Perth add around 5 knots and then if you go further north add a little more. 7m over a 12m would do the trick if your only packing 1 kite.

enjoy!

hey jens, margaret river is one of the heaviest wave spots in australia to kite. if you've only ridden in wind chop in denmark be cautious about going out at margs if it's big.
i'm not telling you how to ride, just be careful

Adelaide has been up and down.

I would bring my gear if I was you. If you don't it will be cranking.

Thanks,
We are staying in Margs, so I will be taking short (1h) trips up/down the cost line in the area from Margs, so if I will bring 2 kites (5-7-9m2) what would be the best pick?
Cheers

Right, i did Cape Town this winter (Jan 2012), but the area is quite forgiven with a clean beach break, so not too bad if you crash and get washed on-shore. Margaret look a nasty with the small narrow tunnel you need to get though, but I guess there are more forgiven spots close by?

Any tips on Margs -stay north or south of the break?, what if you do f... up and you kite get washed? i guess the reef behind the spot is shallow and nasty. Im perfectly fine with 5-8foot waves, so i guess it not too bad if its not more than this?
Cheers

Hey mate- I'm originally from Adelaide and now living in WA near Margs....The Margs swell is pretty rad but as long as you are prepared to lose a kite it is definitely rideable- For my money in Adelaide I would be taking the 12m Park or even better a 10m if you have 1, in Perth i have been riding an 8m BWS most of the time and I weigh app 95kg...hope that helps !

hey!

I can only comment on adelaide as I havent been to margaret river before. I would take both kites if I was you. we've had some pretty good days here, but also light ones.

For waves you can go to the midcoast, Middleton, Goolwa, Robe, but yeah most of them are at least a bit down south (Robe is pretty nice though if you don't mind the drive = about 3hrs).
However, I am not up to the level of wave riding yet so you may find some better suggestions from some of the very keen wave kiters here in SA, so maybe put up a post in the 'SA' section for some more specific replies?

If you are also lovin the flat water stuff, check out North haven on a N/NW er if you lucky, or Port Parham on any S/ SW/W, NW, N direction.

Generally, seabreezes are from the SW here and there are lots of awesome people to meet up with around adelaide!

Cya on the water

cheers, elise

Hi Jens, If u have time drive 30mins further south of Margie's to Augusta .. Has flat water in the rivermouth and small waves in the ocean . Maybe a safer option if u not comfy in big waves . The river at Augusta is also great place to visit for the wife and kids. I normally fly 8-12m with twin tip. If its south westerly 18-25 knots at MR then it is normally perfect conditions at Augusta. Best time of year is jan - march. If I was taking 1 kite it would be 9m. Have a good 1 !!!
