I've lost count how many times freinds ask me they want to try kiteing.Do you think it is cool to try and help after they have had one or 2 lessons ? Or should I leave it to the professionals ????What do you guys recon ? I've only been Kiting myself for about 18 months ,,, I'm at a stage where I can change dirrections and stay up-wind but by no means am I a gun (Yet) /?? Does this happen to anybody else ???

I point my mates to my local kite shop for lessons. I'd rather not have the responsibility.

Depends on the person I guess. If they have had two lessons, their instructor should have covered all of the safety aspects and they should be able to fly the kite to an adequate level. So by that stage they should be trying to get up and ride and imo you should be fine to give em some pointers. They might progress faster with an instructor, but if you feel they are safe (for a noob) then go for it.

However, I reckon its a definite no if they have not had a lesson.

My gf has just had two lessons and I am prepared to lend her my kite because I have watched her lessons. I will be keeping an eye on her and trying to give advice without getting in trouble

They will definatly learn faster with a instructor with there learner friendly gear after they can ride a board in both directions(probably not upwind)and on there own gear feel free to give them some coaching. Instructors know how to teach how to ride as you will be learning how to teach to ride progresion could be frustrating to your mate, so give them some room.

Plus wouldnt you rather be out riding and taking your own skills one step further.

Dont teach your wife, mum, boss or anyone that could afect your life as relationships can be strained to breaking point frustrating you and them.

On second thoughts, I might just pay for her lessons myself. As they say in The Office, its Win-Win-Win. She gets to kite, I get to kite (and no trouble) and the instructor earns some more cash.

If kitesurfing isn't an extreme sport, trying to teach it to your missus is...

Give them a learner DVD and a trainer with plenty of room down wind. Thats enough to feed any mates curiosity. If they are still keen they can take a lesson and they'll be grateful for the time & $ they save from learning on the trainer.

I've been kiting for 2 years and like you am not a 'gun' but know what I'm doing and how to keep myself away from danger.

I've just had first hand experience last weekend at trying to help 2 guy friends who are learning who have had 2 or 3 professional lessons only. My advice is, if you are in a relationship of some sort with that person/persons do NOT help them to learn. These 2 thought they knew everything about kiting and wouldn't listen to any advice I gave them in spite of previously asking me to help them.

I'm not prepared to sacrifice the fun I've always felt when kiting and this day was the worse day I've spent since learning to kite.

Never again.
