Hi everybody,
I live in SE QLD and will be kiting soon in that area... My first block of lessons are booked and i'm super eager to learn, but have been offered 3 kites from a mate of my little Bro's in the USA.. they are slingshot Fuels ( 06 ) models, a 9m, a 13m and a 17m. I am seriously thinking of buying them, but just wonder what the locals down here think...

1. are C kites OK to learn on? I have read so much on both sides with people saying it will make you better in the long run to others saying they are crap compared to modern bow kites and they are a thing of the past....

2 . if i do buy them , is it really worth having the 17m ? it seems to just howl a gale round here and i think the 17m might simply be a waste? am i right ?

Cheers!!

Darren

C kites can be learnt on, alot here did...some even on 2 line..but having depower when learning is a massive safety device. The new F1 bandits are C kites with full depower, the best of both worlds.

If u do go with the fuels, unless u are super heavy id say the 9 and 13 will be fine.

oh and get at least one lesson...oh wait youve booked some...ok, enjoy the addiction.

i learnt on an 05 C kite and it was extremely difficult compared to learning on a bow kite with decent depower. it is also much more dangerous in my opinion. you can always go back to C kites once you've learnt on a bow, plus a single high-depower bow kite will get you out in 90% of conditions so there's generally less cost involved.

OK , thanks for the advice, i reckon ill leave them all alone. without wanting to start a brand war ( had enough of those in skydiving forums..) could you guys/girls maybe suggest a couple of Bows that might be good for a learner?

Thanks

Hi Darren

My advise is to get some lessons first, dont even think about gear yet. If the school is any good, they should have the latest gear for you to try out. You can then decide what suits you best. Make sure the instructor is qualified too - register can be found at www.ikointl.com. Have fun!

yeah lessons first.

get one or two 2nd hand bows is my tip - you won't pay much for them so you won't kill yourself when you crash them into trees/fences/small children etc

anything from 2006 onwards is usually ok, but read up on heaps of interweb reviews to make sure you don't buy lemons.

i'd go for a pair of waroos (cheap) or switchblades, something like that will be easy to find.

It all comes down to the $, learning on cheap gear can be good and bad. The good is you learn quicker(edge, kite control cause alot slower and less forgiving, new kites are alot faster and can be to fast for a newbe. The bad is you can get spanked real hard. it all comes down to U and the $. I am still new to the sport 9mths and just brought a new kite so nice it has made me a better kiter. However i learnt on an old 16mt X3 Naish, and it tought me so many things a new kite would not do until overpowered.

AS THEY SAY NO SCHOOL LIKE OLD SCHOOL.....

I also like several other brand's

How much are you getting the fuel for? If its a cheap price id snatch it up. by the time you have paid to import them then i really dont know. Lesson r essential, and the 06 fuel is an AWESOME kite might just be a little to advanced to learn on compared to other kites on the market. Exceptional kite for wavekiting. Maybe learn on your instructors kites then start using ur fuel if u get them super cheap?

I dont think you have to import duty as they are secondhand.

thanks again, they were 900 us dollars for all 3, with 1 interchangable bar..... i figure ill wait a bit, as i might ahve a radiaclly different view after a bunch of lessons.... i thaink i might have been able to cope on a harder kite as i have 1250 high performance elliptical canopy skydives, but my wife has bugger all and is really eager too, so i must get something a liitle docile for me to account for her.. i have thought about a couple of waroos before even posting this and i think thats what ill go for... i alos figure if i leave it a month or two more the 07 waroo's will take a price dive as this seems to be a "this years gear sport" more than any other i've ever tried!

Cheers

seen some 10-12m kites 06-07 bows/hybrids for as little as $650. I love the feel of a c kite in steady winds, but the fact is, most beginners will progress faster on a kite that can be turned on or off rather than relying on edge control.(some of the 07-08 C kites almost have the depower of a bow).
