Side shore to side off, but comes off of land and typically is gutsy and as holey as swiss cheese.

wind forcasts and melbourne are a myth!
the last 3 days i have had dissapointing results, wind the wrong direction, about 10knots lower than predicted, etc etc! best thing to do is just take all ya kites, go to the beach, see what direction it is, then figure out where u then have to drive to!
we were at frankston on monday, reportedly having 17-20knots NNW, and by the time we had his kite in the air, it was 5-20knots N, lumpy as hell, then in the time it takes to land the kite and sit down, the wind dropped out! like in 10min it was still....... then it rained!
gotta love melbourne!

What doesnt kill you makes you stronger !
The water there is feral - no doubt - especially where is washes in from Skeleton Creek - you can almost taste the diesel.
I wouldnt kite there if I was you! All the more flat water for us junkies.
Another reason to avoid it is that it chews out your board kiting the tidal flats - mine is just about stuffed.
Kited Monday at Rye and it was OK - was coming through high & around 25 knots so I just farted around on my 10m - underpowered at times - totally lit for others....

I had a quick sess at Altona on Sat arvo and have to admit that water is not good.
It was cool dragging the cars along the road and the flat water in the gap in the pine trees was fun.
but stirring up the sand/mud/slush/effluent really gets that Sulfur dioxide stimulating the nostrils.
So freed is it just transport reasons you are wanting to kite there or can you get to other places?
best winds
