So the kite is at 45 degrees, either 10 or 2 depending on the direction of travel, a downloop is down towards the direction of travel and a backloop is the opposite direction of travel...back up and over. Is this correct??

Down loop is with bottom hand back loop is with top hand ,best to start with down loop as your not gonna hammer yourself as much landings from wrongly timed back loops can be harsh,but as plummet said it's all about commitment don't back out half way.

Practice your downloops mid transition before you try them mid air. It will give you a sense of timing, power generated, need to commit, etc.

If you've never tried downloops before, consider practising in shallow water without a board.

Thanks for your help.
An experienced kiter recommended i practice doing backloops just after landing my jumps while trying to maintain an edge, bearing downwind slightly. He said as confidence improves begin timing the loops earlier...like before the landing.
Am ok with downloops at end of run, to keep powered up in a carving turn...not great but ok. Practice practice practice.

This is true. The kite needs to be sent mid air into a full loop.

Try this in 15knots and you will pull it off easy, a little pull - you should land it ok.

But trust me, as soon as you try it in 20+ - you will get smashed. Just go with it, full commit, remember you need to land downwind, and concentrate on the landing rather than the kite, after it has launched you into warp speed.
