Practice your downloops mid transition before you try them mid air. It will give you a sense of timing, power generated, need to commit, etc.
If you've never tried downloops before, consider practising in shallow water without a board.

This is true. The kite needs to be sent mid air into a full loop.
Try this in 15knots and you will pull it off easy, a little pull - you should land it ok.
But trust me, as soon as you try it in 20+ - you will get smashed. Just go with it, full commit, remember you need to land downwind, and concentrate on the landing rather than the kite, after it has launched you into warp speed.
