Hey guys,
I wanta get one but.....
Can you please settle something for me, as I am getting conflicting opinions on the board size by mates etc and not sure now.
Airrush say for board size sub 70 kg's = 138 and above 70kg's you should be buying the 144.
Although mates that I know that have both say they perfer the 138 to the 144 and are about 90 kg's so what to do, also given that surf here in Perth is pretty non existent are they not really using the board for it's correct application i.e waves, and more freeride so they will most likely pick the smaller of the two?
So I'm 90kg's and not sure which way to go so wondering if anyone with first hand experience with these boards or better yet both sizes could give me some advice.

Thanks in advance.

I am 85kg...sometimes 90kgs, depending on season.
I had a hammer 137 which was fine for me. But I needed a little more wind to tak up wind as my 135 nobile. I got the 137 instead of 144 because i prefer a smaller board, and wanted to use it for both wave and freestyle.

If you want to use it in less wind, and mostly for waves - and you have another board for freestyle - then go for 144.

But if its going to be your only board, to use in all conditions - then go a bit smaller.
the 144 is going to be cumbersome when you do tricks and rotations etc.

the 144 will defeinately perform better for your weight in waves.

Cheers thats kinda what I thought also but given my local is Perth and we are not very lucky in the wave department maybe the 138 would be the go, given that I have a 132 Flx for freestyle and a 5 8" underground freewave for just waves???
I just want the hammer for something different but I don't have a lightwind board at the moment.
Anyways hopefully there are a few more opinions then I will take the punt based solely on the feedback I get from you guys here.
Also there is a 138 '09 model available now but for the 144 have to wait 3 more weeks as well, not that thats a biggie, but you know.
Thanks again

Flux if you come down to Cott almost any day it is windy you can try my 138 and a mates (ianMac) 144 back to back (both 2008)
Cheers
Slack

Just re-read your post. Cant you just ride your mates 138 and 144s and see what suits you best. My guess is at 90kg you will have to go the 144.

So as I understand it:

-90kgs
-smaller mushy waves
-you have other flat water boards

The 144 is the only choice. I think you would be dissapointed if you went the 138.

Don't forget the Hammer has tapered tips and a larger rocker, so the amount of board in contact with the water with a 144 Hammer is probably the same as a square tip 138.

Go the 144, a smaller board will feel a little silly on a wave given you surf also.

Yep I would agree with Paradox, I am about 90kg and have the 144 (well I think I still have it......Puppet? ).
My FLX135 will definetly go in lighter wind than 144 Hammer due to 144 having the narrow tips, V in the bottom and more rocker.
I have heard people say the 138 is better than 144 but they are usually a good 10kg lighter than us, you would need to be well powered on a 138.
I agree there is not much in the way of waves in Perth especially in summer, and I see the Hammer as more just something to play around in the mushy shorebreak and chop on,but when you do get some swell (even if it is winter storm swell) if you are going to try to actually ride the wave the more surface area the better as far as I am concerned.

hey Flux
well i weigh 78 -80 kg and the 144 is the go, it takes a little more power to operate one, i would not be able to use it in less than 18 knots or it becomes to sluggish. i fly a 13 mtr ozone sport as SLack says we have one each you are more than welcome to try it out the only mod iiwll do to mine is change the footpads to the underground version as i have found them to be the best pads going.

That's interesting I have an Underground and a Hammer (both 08) and although the Underground pads are good, I prefer the pads on the Hammer. Don't know what year Hammer you have but there was a big improvement in the pads from 07 to 08.

Ian -80kg's, 13m kite and you can't get going in less than 18kts on a 144?

Wow, that seems a bit off. I am 95kg's and have my 144 ripping in 18kts with my 8.5 vapor II. I also have a 138 switch which is one of the best light wind boards you can get and it is not all that much better than the 144 hammer.

I don't find the 144 takes that much more power than a normal board. It does have a softer feel and does not edge as well as others with sharp rails and flat rockers, but if you ride it right there is not a whole lot of difference - not in surf and chop anyway which is where you should be riding it. Dead flat water may be a little different, but that is irrelevent.

There are lot of comments on the Hammer being power hungry, but I really feel that is more related to heavier people riding the 138 not the 144.

Ooooh! Them's fightin' words thems are!

The 144 is definately better for heavier riders. The 138 will also work but then you rely heavily on being really powered all the time on the wave. The moment the power stops, you sink. The 144 surfs really well and isn't too bad going upwind. The 138 seems tiny by comparison especially narrow in the tail which is where the power hungry claims originate.

Good winds,

Hey slack, you also need to remember the ozone speed thing vrs the Nth speed thing,,,leave you standing mate ,,,,as gaz & I do.
"getting going" is "low level flying"

yes i should rephrase 18 knots, 144 hammer, 13 mtr yes you can get along but not nearly as fast with the underground 132cm for example.

horses for courses
speaking of old nags Hey Slack are you upgrading that old Nth kite yet?

Ok looks like 144 it is then, I have one to demo over the weekend so looking forward to that.
Thanks for the advice and the option to try your boards lads, I will also try out the 138 when I can get a hold of it, then hopefully get one, everything kiting that I seem to want this year has come with huge wait times, whats that all about?
Cheers again

I heard that when I bought mine, apparently it was one of the last 144's for a while.

I loves it so much, you won't be sorry if you get one.
