No, but spent a month in Aitutaki about 10 years ago (well b4 even I'd managed to dream up somethin as wild as kiting!) and remember there were heaps of massive sandy lagoons and cays dotted all round the joint. FInd a local wih a boat and do a deal! Nice one. Hear they r shooting survivor over there then, you on it?
The main island is not really any good for kiting due to the shallow Lagoon but Aitutaki looked like it would have been awesome but we were only there for a day and didnt take the kites (dammit).
Hmmmmm Nice shots ..... but confirmed my worry about not reliably enough wind. Difficult ..... if you were there for the right week, great, but might luck out.
I lived on Aitutaki for 2 years, so i can say i know the little island well. Aitutaki would be an excelent place for a kiting holiday. It gets good trade winds. Best to launch at the Aitutaki lagoon resort and cruise for miles along the edge of the reef with great sand islands along the way, good flat water sections too. Recomend it.
Hi, we too have been looking at the Cook Islands around July, it looks pretty good to us!!
The wind look ok at that time of the year, we went to Fiji last year and got some good and some bad wind, but the thing that the cooks seem to have over Fiji is the sand bottom lagoons where Fiji has a lot of corral which hurts if you get cut!
Let us know when you are thinking of going, if you are keen for some kiting buddies we might be able to tee up the same week/location etc.
Here are some details on the wind Should have SE trade winds of 15-25 knots Historical Kitable days 14 - 30 knots base on high not average 1-15 July 2005 7 2004 10 2003 2 15-31 Jul 2005 5 2004 5 2003 10 1-15 Aug 2005 6 2004 9 2003 7 15-30 Aug 2005 9 2004 7 2003 5
Snowman, I was thinking to have 10 days at the start of July. You'd have to be very unlucky not to get some kiting in that time span. I also dive, and have been in contact with a loval operator .. seems good.
I like the idea of teeing up, I think it would open up options of getting a local boat to help us with some drop offs or pick ups for down winders.
Hey Fiji Kiter, can you see the reef working safely for getting into the waves? The aerial photos suggest it must be workable.
Snowy, drop me a line if you have some dates in mind. Likewise if anyone else is keen.
Went there 2 years ago for kiting in end of may. Had 20-25knts for 7 days. Muri lagoon is really the only spot on raro that you can kite. It's got mostly sandy bottom. Cyrstal clear water. Never got any further than raro, was good enough there. Hope this helps.
Aitutaki does not have any surf breaks. The waves break strait on to the reef. We never saw anything surfable, well fpr surfboards. Anyhow the fringing reef drys at low tide, so there isnt much water to the coral.
You may find some small waves breaking on the reef at high tide that you might get something from. But overall its a no
