Yup - was there last month and saw a few guys on kites. Loads of protected water, perhaps not very consistent winds. Best in the AD winter/our summer.

We had a student who just returned to Abu for work on Monday. He was a windsurfer and lives just off the water there. I said was, think we have converted him so there's another kiter you'll see there!

Got a mate who's a kite instructor in Dubia. Reckons he can work an average of 6 days a week all year round if he wants to. Lightish winds but regular as clockwork and more flat water than anyone could ever imagine. Looks awesome in his pics. Shallow channels between ankle deep sandspits as far as the eye can see. Droool drool. He kites 2ks to & from his hotel to his kite beach everyday.

Disclaimer - his words. I wouldnt know - but Id sure love to find out

Was there 2 months ago and was HOT HOT HOT - i'd seriously consider to compensate for bladder inflation incase it bursts with expansion.

I wouldn't have been comfortable kiting there - didn't see any places that screamed kite potential - was all a bit too conservative looking.

Hi Boostabigair,

I've just returned from Dubai and have been kiting there for the last 12 months. We have been pushed off many beaches there and can now only kite at on the Kite Beach just down from the Burj al Arab and Ghantoot which is on the Abu Dhabi border about a 30 minute drive from the Buj Al Arab in Dubai. It is full of 4x4 parked right down to the water, quad bikes, jet skiiers etc so you will be squeezed.

For Abu Dhabi kiting you need to contact jakup on [email protected]. He is on the beach every weekend and a great guy who will tell you where to kite in Abu Dhabi. They have trips to one of the islands just off Abu Dhabi where the winds blows well and the water is flat. Like Dubai, the kiters are being pushed off the beaches for property development.

The winds are very light in Dubai 5 - 15 kts. I used a Liquid Force 13m at all times (I'm about 60 kgs)and most guys use 16m or 18m bows. Sometimes we would get a 16 kt wind but mostly 11 - 13 kts if we were lucky. In the summer the wind may only come in for an hour about 4pm so you have to sit it out and wait. The waters are not flat. They are choppy, often with a shorebreak. The winds from June to October are mainly direct onshore 8 kts - 13 kts. October November - winds light direct onshore or non existant. Jan - May some good cross onshore winds sometimes up to 16 kts but not always. On the strong days (20 kts + which happen a few times a year only) most UAE kiters are sitting it out because they don't have small enough kites. During the summer we were pumping kites in 48 c and the water is 37 c. Great for heat stroke.

I came back to Oz to experience the stronger winds so don't drool. The learning curve in Dubai is very long as the winds are not predictable. Kiting is cruisy and safe there but if you want real excitement you need to go to Oman with it's 30 kt winds and waves - 8 hours drive from Dubai. If you want to talk to me before you go about kiting in the UAE call me on 0410 786643. I was out chasing the wind EVERY weekend so know the conditions very well. Get on to dubaikiteforum and contact Mustafa or George. Hope you enjoy your trip.
