Cher, we spent three weeks kiting there a couple of years ago. The first two weeks were strong sea-breezes every day, the last week inconsistent. Guincho has awesome waves, the strongest wind because of mountain funnelling, but it is very gusty. Water is cold too. Other spots to try include Peniche or the beaches south of Lisbon.

The Algarve, SW coast about 5 hours drive is very good, especially around Faro.

I can recommend the book, 'The Windsurfing and Kitesurfing guide to europe' . A friend from Europe left me with a copy so do not know if it available here. They give a comprehensive rundown on all spots including wind strengths, access, waves, hazards etc.

Portugal is a bit like WA in reverse with wind a Northerly Seabreeze, most consistent early -mid summer, generated between a fairly stable Azores high and the Iberian Low. Water is cold due to an upwelling so full 2/3 wetties in summer. I windsurfed Guincho in 88. I recall it being very windy when it was windy [up to 40kts] but in these conditions more moderate conditions can be found further North. Waves are really good in most parts and there are outstanding surfbreaks in the Peniche area with morning offshores. and PM sideshores
