So what's the go, are kite schools allowed to teach where ever they want or do they get a permit to teach at a certain beach or area only?

I knwo they require permits at St Kilda, not sure about other areas. I think they do still require insurance irrespective of where they teach. Why do you ask? Its probably worth asking the KBV to see if they know.

Altona. A few years back I had a chat to a guy runing lessons and he told me schools were nt allowed to teach at Altona (or at elast he wasn't).
So just wondering if that changed. Seen a school rocking up there recently with a bus full of nobs takign over the flattest part of Altona. Just hoping it's not going to turn into a st'kilda.

I think you're talking about saturday. The event was moved to altona because of the wind direction and they were doing some instruction (I launched the other end) there but its not a regular thing and I don't see it happening on an ongoing basis because the onshore combined with shallow water could be dangerous for instruction on anything but high tide.

The odd mate teaches a mate now and then at Altona, and I'm cool with that so long as they wade a ways out and don't try flying the kite on the beach. One of the joys of Altona is the relatively low gumby factor and I'm sure there's a few of us who'd like to keep it that way.

So as for schools, I advise them to not even think about it. We're more than saturated with schools in Melbourne and more than saturated with noobs who have not learned adequate safety, right-of-way and self-rescue from these schools.

Altona, as an onshore spot with a narrow beach, should really be regarded as an intermediate and above spot. There are plenty of safety hazards, not the least of which are the rich microbial population and the e-coli-fuelled militant locals.

I heard from someone it was the week of wind one, but it was third hand so it may not be correct. I launched the other end so I didn't see what was happening that side.
