Today was honking with about 35 kites out at Yorkeys, should have been just as good at Port Douglas. About 17-22 kts all arvo. Tomorrow is looking just as promising. The real gem is Green Island with green arrows all day. I think there are some very high expectations about "windy season" and we had a quet start to it, but the pattern seems to have returned to normal.
Not just the great warm winter riding. Kiteweek is some of the best fun you can have all year!! By far one of the best fun weeks in the Australian kiting scene (neck and neck with the Mambo), my only trouble last year was trying not to have too much fun - i failed for sure. Can't wait for this year!!
Yes there is a weather patern currently with strong trades. The weather however is a fickle thing.Strong frontal and east coast lows in the south can stuff this up for a few days .trade winds are not a dead cert .It is better to be realistic that things could shut down while you are there and have a plan B. The three white guys in a mini bus visited Vanuatu a month ago .6 weeks prior and since was 20 kts SE evry day .When we were there the drought breaking rains arrived in NSW and Vic and the wind was bleah. We did do other things and i would not say that van is crud as a result to be fair we were just unlucky. I have sent a few newbs to NTH QLD this winter and they have kept a few days free and checked out the weather systems http://www.weatherzone.com.au/charts/twcGrads.jsp?model=gfs&chart=mslp&domain=AUS&hour=120 and booked 7 days out with Jetstar or whoever and still got great deals(still is a bit risky they might be sold out)
i'll be in port douglas in 10 hours!enjoy the cold 'suckers'.but only for a week, then back to the wettie. aah well.hope theres wind because i only have one bag of cocktail umbrellas.
