In Australia, we've got a term used to describe people like 888888: "Bogan". Other adjectives can be used to supplement the term. In 88888case, "Stupid Fat Bogan".

In general, a bogan is someone who is self-centred, uneducated, disrespectful, and lacking in manners. Their lives are generally characterised by dysfunctional interpersonal relationships, smoking, excessive alcohol intake, drug taking, unemployment or marginal menial employment, porn, hookers, and stupidity.

88888 background, ie working class, fat, smoker, porn-obsession (see "Best Girls"), dysfunctional relationships with women, and wakeboarding (along with motorcross, the sport of choice for petrol-head bogans) probably explains his current attitude to riding in The Gorge. To a lesser extent, this uneducated, self centred, nuffy stupidity is seen in a lot of Slingshot riders. It is probably the main reason we are heading towards widespread restrictions and bans in a lot of areas.

Location: Australia As a girl - yeh, I know, with attitude, I have a lot of sympathy for other female kiters, particularly if they are fairly "good looking."

There is something about kitesurfing that attracts a really high number of w*nkers and try-hard losers; a lot more, say, than football. Don't know why it's like that - maybe because it is so easy compared to other sports and you don't have to be fit or strong to do it. Anyway, in my experience, there are a lot of creeps and weirdos in this sport.

There are all sorts of ways we get hassled: Staring, people trying to start conversations with you when you are rushing to get out on the water, guys talking to you when you just want to be left alone, guys riding near you just to be close to you. After a while it gets really frustrating and upsetting.

I can imagine if some creepy old guy was riding deliberately close to me or trying to talk to me or making intense eye contact with me, I could easily snap, maybe just tell him to f*** off. And then if he tried to come over and talk to me again after that, I could easily get REALLY MAD and loop his kite. Very easy to imagine.

Hmm I can kind of see some of what Suze is saying, but I still reckon about 95% of kiters are decent people, and that has nothing to do with race, religion, colour, sexual persuasion, employment history, or type of work. It's the 5% of genuine tossers that give the sport a bad name, both to the public and within the community.

As for getting hit on: I'm a very average looking bloke with a rough mug so I don't get too much attention and/or unwanted advances from most kiters (male or female). Except perhaps from some of the "more mature" Kurnell crew, but I'm not sure if that just means I have still got it...

The WORST thing in kiting is chicks who think that they are hot and think that every guy on the beach is hitting on them! Im perving on the topless sunbathers, not some deep-voiced flat chested she-kiter who thinks she is all that and a bag of potato chips!

Oh and guys in speedos, thats just plain wrong.

defamation of character from a forum.

In this country it is not defamation if what you are saying is true and is not private information - so Shannon may be (allegedly ) out of luck for his prospective court case...

Smedg - wow 50/50! I hope I don't kite at your beach...
