seems there have been alot people asking about doing a crossover from the IKO qualification to the BKSA instructor qualification. my school is changing over to the BKSA system and my 9 partner schools will be doing the same. i will be running some 2 day crossover training courses on feb 26 in thailand. i believe andy will be doing more of these courses when he is in perth in jan. the 2 day crossover course will give you a 3 year BKSA instructors licence which will soon be recognised australia and asia wide. soon it will become the new world standard.

looks like cost will be 200pounds per person plus 150pounds per day for the instructor. with 6 people in the course the total cost per person will be 250pounds which works out to around 230 aussie dollars. licence lasts 3 years.

250 pounds is about 400 bucks mate, you may want to buy a new calculator before you get balls deep in this bksa thing......

The BKSA Course is $650 Australian, still cheaper than the IKO course but the BKSA is not internationally recognized like the IKO is.
@ Kiwi Mike you said BKSA is a non-profit organisation where is that money going to?
Is any of the $650 going back to AKSA?

that is a good question ruffryder61. but one to be directed to the ASKS. i will be holding the courses here. i hope they will be identical and recognised internationally. there will have to be a fee of course and included in that will be something to support the BKSA (if they are involved) something to cover the examiners time and expenses. i am going to donate my school to run the courses but in the future there will have to be a fee to cover the schools time and expenses if other schools are going to run them. it would be interesting to see the breakdown of the AKSA course.

Biggest issue I see for the BKSA accreditation is, as ruffryder suggests, it is not accepted in many places around the world, sort of like PASA accreditation.

Many of the instructors I taught in my time as Examiner wanted to use the accreditation for travel. For that, the IKO still has the global reach. Why the world can't standardise is beyond me. French have VVFL, Germans have theirs, USA has PASA, UK has BKSA, Italians have their own system and the rest use IKO. IKO is in most parts of the world with the exception of France.

Kiwimike has his own agenda driven by anger and vengance to see BKSA in Australia as do most of the active members in these anti IKO, Pro BKSA threads. If the BKSA system is good, there's no problem with that as I see an alternative to IKO in Australia as healthy and will certainly keep IKO on their toes. A monopoly in anything is never good.

Lets be fair dinkum though and state it for what it is right now, not for what it might be in the future. BKSA is predominantly known in the UK and may be starting to reach into parts of Asia, however, as it stands right now, it still has a very long way to go to become globally accepted.

Lets just not hoodwink people into believing it is more than it is, as some punters will be royally pissed if they spend their $650 to help pay for travel by teaching only to find that few schools will accept their accreditation in other parts of the world and they then have to do an IKO IEC (Instructor Equivalency Certification) at additional cost to gain the certs they need to travel and teach. If there are only a few schools BKSA accredited, then they are likely to be flooded with appplications from British travellers who already have the BKSA accreditation and experience in teaching which will make getting a job in those schools next to impossible.

I'm not anti or Pro either camp, I'm just making sure people have a more balanced understanding so they can do a little homework and decide which system suits them best for their individual needs.

If you just want to teach in UK or Aus, then eith BKSA or IKO will be fine, for travel, more research is required.

Cheers,

DM

This is a waste of money for existing IKO instructors.

IKO & BKSA standards are very much the same, it would make sense for IKO L2 instructors to receive BKSA L1 on completion of an online bridging course, exam and document check.

All it should cost is the course/exam fee and administration/processing fee which would be well below the $250 + 2 days cost that has been suggested.

we are looking at launching the kite safe associtaion in the next couple weeks. kite safe asia will be one area of the global standard. we hope to form an association with all the organisations mentioned to form a global standard. an international licencing system will be the first step in the global standard. it will issue real plastic instructor licences. it will issue a real plastic riders card whose level will be able to be checked online. i will be the area rep for asia. we have local quality control reps for most of the countries in asia already. we will be looking to partner up with international organisations to represent their different parts of the globe. at this stage i am looking at accepting many of the recognised instructor training qualifications and automatically giving out the KSA instructor licence. i hope to do this over the next 8 weeks. the licence will have the instructors photo, details and the qualification he or she had before joining the KSA. this will be the globally accepted licence in the future. please bear with me as it is going to take some time to change everyone over.
