I have heard that after an accident the other day where some loser launched upwind of the flags and crashed his kite through the crowds they are banning kiting at Peregian.

Does anyone know if this is true or just a rumour. And PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE people DONT LAUNCH UPWIND OF THE FLAGS!!!

Tide will be running out at Maroochydore until about 3pm tomorrow. The winds have been really onshore and also predicted for tomorrow - the rivermouth will be the only go.
Are you keen for the rivermouth Dustin, Padi...?

Ok, spoke with Vic who was there on the day. He says an Indonesian local dude launched his kite upwind of the flags (apparently he is a highly experienced kiter), his lines were tangled and his kite helicoptered into the flagged area. Apparently this has happened a few times and was brought up at an official meeting. On this occation a boy had an injury to his arm which may result in a lawsuit against Peregian Club for not providing safe area for bathers.

Vic was at this meeting also and preached for us kiteboarders but he has told me that the move IS being contemplated and will be coast wide, leaving us with Kawana and Noosa North Shore but no other location, so boys kiss the downwinders goodbye if am accident happens again. A ban isn't official yet. The laws of sailing apply to a kite and in regards to the flagged area a buffer zone of 300 metres must be given to these areas. That means if you are <300 metres upwind of the flagged area YOU are contributing to the ban and have no right getting angry over it equally if you see anyone doing the same thing then its YOUR responsibility to set them straight as they are going to stop you being able to kite at your favorite beach. Education will stop this ban, however it is up to whoever reads this to educate offeneders. If it involves burning the offenders kite I will gladly assist, also if you see someone and cant get to them in time put there kite details and description on this post and we will all keep an eye out. I can understand where the club is coming from, if legal action is a posibillity then the club will do everything in there power to ban kiteboarding on the beach.

And don't think for a minute they wont.If there is even a whiff of litigation. The Council will do whatever it can to prevent losing scarce
dollars they have for lifesaving services.
IT ALMOST HAPPENED at the channel @ Caloundra.Because of one idiots stupid behaviour.
They held a closed meeting to determine what legislation they could use to make a ruling without listening to any representations by the local kiting community. I only heard about it cause I was working for CCC @ the time.
Fortunately there was no legislation in QLD pigeonholing kiting. But in NSW kiting is WIND POWERED NON DISPLACEMENT VESSEL.Legally we were screwed but I approached the Councilor in charge and convinced him to allow a representation of local kiter/ratepayers interests. Beck and Matt were asked to speak on our behalf and they agreed to abstain this time but the warning was "WE WILL BE WATCHING"
So take heed and do what ever it takes to keep our access.
ONCE ITS GONE ITS FOR GOOD!!!!!!

Hey guys MSQ or Marine Safety Queenlsand consider kite surfers to be a Non Moterized vessel so therefore require that you keep your distance by at least 30m, sailing rules also apply.AKSA have been working with them as stated on the broshure I have.
Personaly I dont think this is enough room and would think that at least 60m should be considered. It all comes down to LEEWAY the more the better.
300m sounds too good when flags areas on a beach is considered.

We are right to say,it is up to us to consider giving other bch users a wider berth.

Consider the bans being imposed on PWC as window into the future of what could happen. We are being watched.LEEWAY

What about some signs saying......

If you launch upwind of flaged area your kite will be confiscated!

There is to much at stake here to not do somthing about this !!

I will be one of the many Pissed off kiters when someone
else does it again an you know, it is only a matter of time.

Give the clubbies the authority to enforce this, as self regulation is to hard to make happen.

If we dont do this we risk a total banning of our favourite downwinder,

how would ya feel then....

Like I said, it is up to YOU to enforce these terms of at LEAST 300m upwind. If you see someone ENFORCE IT, YELL AT THEM, TELL THEM YOU WILL MURDER THEM (maybe not), WHATEVER... otherwise you are as much at fault as they are. Education is prevention.

STAY CLEAR!

has anyone thought of doing an education day for the lifegaurds, taking them through all the safety and beginner stuff with kiting, people who dont kite perceive it to be more dangerous than it really is. education is by far the most important thing and should include those who are indirectly involved with our sport. I will be happy to give a day of my time to this cause, keahi, lewis and all other perigian locals, if you think this is a good idea let me know. all should be involved. take away the fear of the unknown and you will be amazed at the change of the attitudes, at least we can be seen by the council to be a responsible group who shouldnt be punished for 1 or 2 peoples silly actions.

Good idea Mike, educate the clubbies bacause they are the ones there on the spot all the time and they could pull the offenders up soon as they see them start to set up in the wrong place !

99% of us locals do the right thing but we do need the help of the clubbies to educate the touros an newbies that can and do show up when no locals are around to do the job.

And as I said befor also, a sign, in the right place is a must.

yeah, good idea. I recon that there should be a rule: Setting within 300m upwind of a flagged area is NOT ALLOWED. anything can go wrong.

But wait on a minute. Just after "the incident" actually happened, we went and spoke to some lifeguards on duty at perigian as we were setting up down wind of them. The said that they didnt even know of such an incident.

MORE INFO PLEASE

Different lifeguards/lifesavers do different shifts, so they were probably not doing a shift that day. They are like the infantry compared to the officers in the army. The infantry dont know what happens on the offical side of things until they are ordered to enforce final rulings. Coolum alone has 20 odd different squads of 5-10 lifesavers each with there own patrol captain. This issues was brought up at an official meeting, so unless that lifeguard was at the meeting or on duty that day then there is is no reason to know about it.

Maybe this is a time we start a Sunshine-Perigian-Coolum Kitesurfing club?

Hi Guys,

Educating the clubbies is a good idea, but beware the double edged sword

Showing them the basics of kiting and how it all works will also show them the potential for disaster and will probably help to confirm their fears of huge power, sharp taut lines and the other nasties, after all, they have seen what happens when it goes wrong already

I'm not saying it's not a good idea, I'm suggesting a very cautious well thought out approach rather than blindly running in introducing them to the world of traction kiting.

Good luck and I hope to come over some day and do one of your downwinders with you guys and bash a few waves.

Good winds,
