I was down at the beach this morning and saw this guy doing some amazing jumps:

I was particularly impressed by the way he didn't have a harness and was grabbing the chicken loop whenever he wanted to depower the kite...

As a beginner, is there anything I should know before trying this? It looks like fun

Come down to our local beach and start jumping about and you'll find out the meaning of the word "agro".

Not recommended.

^ Oh that would be funny. Best would be to bring a cup of hot latte and hold it while beach jumping, with boardies outside wetsuit.

Kurnell has a few grumpy kiters at times... I got told off for boosting in a bad spot, realising I was screwed mid-jump, making a stupid noise and landing on my face... I thought it was hilarious and couldn't stop laughing...

They are all awesome ... I know you guys care about safety though, so just pulling your legs.

...at least he's wearing shoes.

I have done a lot of beach jumping in the past (before starting kite-surfing), and it is great fun.

Though, it needs to be done on a place with lots of space + uncrowded, and soft sand is more suitable to avoid ankle/knee injuries on landings. Some people do it on grass...

I use to do it with Mandibule foils, these are 2 lines foils especially design for this purpose: huge hangtime and very slow turning. Only with handles, no harness, it is much safer that way. Also it is wise to do it with someone else, not on your own, because you quickly get tired on your arms/sholders. With kite-surfing kites (bar and harness) it is more dangerous because you can't let go as easily in case of problem and you have more lines to deal with... but can be manageable too.

Pierre Cardineau, the designer of Mandibule kites got the world record for lenght:

Yeah you should know better than to post pictures of this kook without naming and shaming him.
