Hi guys

Just thought I'd ask what peoples opinions were of what beacons are best for different winds at Brighton and Wello.

WELLO
Don't know much about Wello, except that Banana bank is the closest beacon. I presume it is good for SE,E,NE indications . What about N, NNE, NW, SW?

BRIGHTON
Seems the inner beacon is pretty good for SE,E,NE. I found take about 3-4knots off inner beacon for any N,NNE. I presume this is because of the effect of the Redcliffe headland.

Mornin' Mal

Wello

With many of the wind directions at Wello, it can be a 20-25 knots pure Westerly at Wello, and the Banana Bank beacon will only show 18/20 knots post times. The reason for this is that the Becon is a bit protected from the W'ly winds, whereas Wello gets the true winds. This is also the same when the Banana Bank shows 18 knots E'ly, you don't actually get the 18 knots on the point at Wello, but once you kite out about 150m's towards straddy so the reserve isn't protecting the Winds, you get the full strength of it. Quite deceptive many of the winds strengths are...

In a S'ly through to E'ly go by Banana Bank as this Beacon will show the most winds, and also check the Inner Beacon one to ensure it's consistant.

In a NE'ly through to N/NW'ly check Spitfire and Inner Beacon and average the two off remebering. (Inner Beacon and Banana Bank also applies to S'ly but it is a lot more gusty than the Beacons say as it is directly off the point at Wello).

And in any of the W'ly winds, check the winds as it passes through to Banana Bank, but remember that there is more wind at Wello in these directions than show son the beacon.

Goodwinds, and let's hope todays 5/10, then 10/15, then 15/20 actually shows in the early arvo

Geeze you guys are early birds, even add two hours from WA time and it's still early for a Sunday morning - I thought I was the only crazy person up at that hour.

Bit anti-climatic at wello this arvo, eh? Haven't seen that many kiters and kites standing hopefully on the spit for a long time.

he he he. I laugh now, in 2 weeks, I'll be joining y'all standing there waiting for wind - YAY!?

oh yeah (getting to the point) I agree pretty much with what Elizabeth says, but for Brighton I usually look at Redcliffe and the Airport and average the two then factor in what the inner beacon/spitfire channel are saying depending on the wind direction.

til the next windy day......

Tried Sandgate today. Never been there. The wind was fantastic and everyone seemed to have a blast.

It's quite good there with lots of room to set up and it's a little bit further away from the general public than most.

Kurt - did I see a 14m Waroo? There woulda been maybe 14 kites there today and I reckon half or more were Waroos.

Thx for the wind/beacon advice guys.

I was really lit on my 16m caution spitfire - holding on for dear life some of the time , but having a ball. I had to work hard to keep control as it really doeosn't have much depower (the strap was fully in of course). Then had a go on Trevor's 12m Waroo (just as the wind died - lol). I am in the early stages of learning how to jump (and land) and just lovin it - woot!! :)

Saw you out at Sangate on Sunday arvo with the 16 Caution. That was a lot of kite up for your level of experience on that day and their were times when I saw you struggle but to your credit you did well. The biggest danger with a large kite is in launcing and landing with the tall trees behind us. One good way of deciding kite choice is looking around what size kite others were using, you would have noticed you had the largest kite out their.

I was the guy screaming at you when you were only a few feet downwind of the guy on the old white Wipika. That guy was out of control and you were directly down wind of him and in serious danger of getting hit, I was trying to distract him and get his attention.

Please take my words as a helpfull hint and not a put off. The Sandgate area is a area were more experience kiters hang out as Brighton Beach is now used mostly by learners. All are welcome and Sunday showed how we still have a good feel just like we had in the old days at Brighton Beach.

Thx for the words hardcarve. Certainly don't remember the guy upwind of me in trouble. I know I was lit, and I know most kites were smaller than mine, but my decision was a good one.

There were a lot of other kiters with a lot less experience out there than me - namely the guy that was supposedly out of control on his Wipika, and another guy with his Waroo trying to get up on his board. We all rely on people to be under control and with that in mind I did not have any problems with running into people downwind of me or anything! If I got out there and felt out of control I would have gone back in. If I bog down or slow down I would expect people to go either upwind or downwind of me. Do you think I should ride at a consistent speed all the time? What do other people think?

I don't take it as a put down - but man SANDGATE beach is for everyone - not just those that consider themselves as intermediates or experts - get real man.
