Hey I am looking for some suggestions on a board. I am a complete beginner had a couple of lessons bought all the gear except a board. I weigh 80kg have a 12m kite, location is Sydney.

I was told i should look at something about 142cm does that sound right? I spent a couple of grand on gear already as I thought it was important to get a new kite as they improve in safety so much each year. I would prefer to not spend a grand on a new board though if I can help it.

What should I look for in a second hand board?

Cheers Jared.

I like to suggest that you look for 'long term' investment. You'll save more money in the process and be much happier. If you're getting a used board get one that isn't a beginner type board.

I see so many people buy a cheap brand new beginner board and they dont relise that in kiting you progress really fast and youll outgrow the board. When you go to sell that board...you dont get much for it. If you're getting a 142cm...an Underground FLX142 would be sweet it just might be a bit too $$$ for you.

If you think long term and invest yoour money in a good quality board youll keep it for more then one season and be very happy with it.

I agree, you'll outgrow a board quickly. Get an intermediate board now and it'll last you for a couple of years.

Jared, I bought a second hand board for around $400 when I was learning and still have it now. It's a 142 and I weigh 80kg. I reckon if you spend around $500 on a second hand board, you will keep it for around 2 years. Make sure that it's a good make and that the footstraps are good.

Definately don't go for anything longer than 142.

Hey Kared, all the previous posts are right, a 142 or 141 would be good however if it is an older stiff board it will be hard to edge in stronger winds, also it may be long but to thin, thus making it unstable, the wider the board the easier it is to plane and far more stable alot of the new boards have heaps of flex in the tips which make them great allrounders. underground flx, M8 and cardboards seem to have this sussed in the last 2 years or so. do your research on each board m8 and cardboards are aussie made thus cheaper new anyway. around 850 bucks if you cant stretch your budget that much you will pick up good 2nd hand boards.
good luck
