Hi all.

Im looking to pick your brains for what you think are the best airline for domestic flights (Perth/Adelaide) with kitesurfing equipment.

Im trying to do it as cheap as I can without getting stung for excess baggage fees.

Also If any of you know good airlines to fly to NZ with kitesurfing equipment that would be great to.

Again I'm sorry, was just looking for advice. Of course I've looked but I was looking for any experiences people have had.

My hot tips:
1: Take a carry on bag (kite bag) + a formal suit bag (Air NZ didn't weigh this-only my bag-guess they thought there's just a suit in there..there was..it was a wetsuit!).
So kites+harness minus spreader bar are on your back.
Clothes, wetsuit, footpads in your suit bag.
Total carry on for me was 7Kg kite bag, 8Kg suit bag (freeing up 20kg for board and luggage!).

Apparently there are 'kite' gear travelbags now available that have 'golf bag' written all over them so the airlines and their luggage handlers take more care, They think it's the property of some top-notch, repeat flight suit in business class who they don't want to peeve off and send all those frequent flyer points to another airline.

Jetstar. Just did the same trip. You can always purchase more baggage if you need in blocks of 10kg, well priced. Not sure if Virgin is doing this type of extra baggage option.

I would be very careful of going over the weight limit.
I recently flew only about 1000KM Brisbane to Mackay and was 32KG, (12KG Over)
The overweight cost the same as about 3 tickets with 20KG included. It was something like $15 or $20 per KG over. So I could have sponsored two people to fly for free as long as they carry my bags and still be better off.

you're right the gibbo , since my subscription ran out i've had nothing to moan about . Unfortunately due to my daily trolling of forums across the internet and reading so many " what should i do , because i can't do anything for myself" threads windswept got an abrupt response from me .

Be a little smarter at packing

Weigh your bag before you go, so you know what you got and there are no surprises.
Make the most of carry on with heavy items like spreader bar, fins etc as they dont usually weigh that, just make sure your bag is not to big and when you carry it make sure it looks easy to carry.

You are also allowed to carry a suit bag or a laptop bag (they dont usually check what inside them)

If you go over, have your harness packed on top, if they ask if there is anything you can take out, just wear it (the spreader is in the bag)

And virgin no longer have the 5kg sporting goods allowance, so jetstar probly the cheapest and the way you can buy extra KG is a good idea if you know your over when you buy your tickets.

I recently bought my 13m and 9m plus lunacy board down to adelaide. Took 9m on carry on. Had a "laptop" bag which did have a laptop but also was stuffed full of clothes...and then my 13m and harness in luggage and i paid an extra $10 for the weight. Make sure you pre-buy your luggage. All up i took 32 kg on a $250 flight to Adelaide. A success i say.

if you can fit a small kite into a laptop bag...do it. They dont check.
