New cal? not consistent wind that time of year - have been and scored that time of year but got lucky

Coco? dunno, my brother went there and really liked it dunno how consistent though

Fiji? can be good bit on off

Bali? possible over to west but usually very light - hardly ever go below a 12m - days of no wind

Maui? windy everyday. Not up there for perfect flat water but only place i been in june and july where it is windy 95% of the time (oahu is no worth it).

FNQ . port douglas / cairns - not all time or anything but not too bad bit on off.. but enough. further north great if you organised.

I wanna go christmas island in pacific - stopped flights that i needed last time i looked.

I've done Cocos with Zephyr and PNG aboard Golden Dawn. Both are excellent trips offering very different experiences. PNG was an adventure and offered multiple superb kiting locations. Cocos was non stop kiting, relaxing, and drinking beer.

If you want culture and variety and don't mind the odd minor hassle getting there, go to PNG.

If you want max kiting hours for days of leave, go to Cocos.

Can't go wrong with either.

So it looks as if my funded winter trip to Aitutaki is looking a little shaky and i may need have to go back to self funding my own trip. Im tossing up still going to Aitutaki or trying something new like the Cocos Islands. Has anyone done both and can provide a comparison?

from scrolling the information on the internet I thinking that:

Cocos would have more consistent wind;
Aitutaki would have more options for dinning;
Both seem to have about the same kiting area;
Aitutaki is a few hundred $$$ cheaper to get to;
Cocos has no daily boat rides to worry about.
Aitutaki gets you about an extra 5 days accommodation that the cost of 10 days in the Cocos

Any thing else?

Other than that my other option would be Australian Kite surfari but thats not the same as going to an island

safe as houses in the lagoon and out on the sand islands where the kiting is done. Not a lot for them to do other than beach activities, swimming with turtles, fishing that sort of things. No real food options other than a few fish BBQ type places.

No Wifi, no TV.

I wouldn't recommend it for kids, great for flat water kiting and cocktails around the lagoon for you and the +1

For you guys in NZ, maybe take the family to Rarotonga and then you duck over to Aitutaki for a few days kiting

Mauritus , kite thrills , I've been Bali loads, fiji, Maui , port Doug. , dreamed about maritus now booking. , be careful with flight days you need to get this right to avoid thinking u can't get there .

What about safarilodge in fiji?

I just came back from Safari Lodge and wouldn't recommend it, way too expensive for a dodgy backpackers which is basically what it is. No flat water or good waves, just ocean chop. No beach to launch or land just coconut lined reef so you have to wait for everyone every time you want to go in the boat.

The owner, Warren, is fine as long as nothing goes wrong and you don't complain. He doesn't cope very well if anything is out of the ordinary and he'll sting you for everything once you're there, even the lessons are way more than Australia.

Been back from Cocos a few weeks now. Wind was ON everyday and warm waist deep water where you kite in the lagoon. A great place to learn and improve skills.

I improved a huge amount. From just getting up on the board to going upwind with confidence and edging well on a smaller board.

Not much on the island. Great for fishing if your into that, There are a few good Snorkeling spots too and booze is cheap too.

I went with Zephyr kite tours, hired a vehicle and stayed in the local village bungalows. Definately looking to go back next year.
