Im in my second last year of school and have to design and build something for a majior project next year, i was thinking of making a bike trailer for all my kiting gear. Just wondering if anyone has any idears or advice on size, shape, materials, etc and if any one has any pics of existing ones and improvements they would make if they did another one.

Have a look at those ones people tow kids about in that fit 2 kids. Then you just have to create a mount point for your board.

The major issue I saw with the current range of bike trailers is they don't cater for actual board attachments. If you can add a board attachment to either side without increasing the width too much, it would already be an improvement.

Yeah, ive got one, ill post a photo and my recommendations (probabily over the weekend)... pretty much adding a frame for attaching boards (i have a very large skim board which wont go on)... apart from that its great

You mean a pushbike trailer right?

Nice idea for a project. It's been too long since I rode to the beach, but here's my set up.

The trailer is a "Bob-Yak" which are one wheeled trailers, great to ride with because they lean into the corners with you. I would like to mount a vertical surfboard rack on it, something like a fork sticking up at the front and back....

My 3 grommets share these 2 surf-trailers that I made. ^^^
3 into 2 does go......
cause you can stack 2 boards on a trailer.
I hope you can get some ideas from these examples.

There is a great design on the web somewhere that encourages you to use sustainable/recycled materials. You can build it out of bamboo (strong, light and cheap). You then have some tensioned wire cross braces to keep it rigid, and it also uses full sized bicycle wheels, so if you have an old bike somewhere you can ressurrect it in a new form.

Awesome idea for a project. If you are going to do it, try and concentrate on using recycled/sustainable materials, which is a philosophy that riding a bike for transport fits in with. (I reckon you could do it for less than $20 if you re-use bits too) You will get lots of bonus points for that. Oh, and show us some photos when it's done mate!

Some great ideas flying around here! I would also have a look that the board racks that you seek on wake boats...

They come in a variety of sizes and shapes to suit different boards, I'm sure the style for knee boards would go close to doing the job for a directional and the standard type for your twin tips...

Mount them on a centre vertical pole and your in business!

We dont have to start till about October, so im still just looking for idears. Im thinking of doing it out of aluminium (or old bikes) as its a metal based subject, only problem with aluminum is joining, i can probely TIG weld it at the local Tafe though.
Im thinking something like tobes trailer but not 100% sure yet theres heaps of positives and negatives for 2 wheals or 1 wheal and where to attach it to the bike.
ill definatly have 2 center poles like on the wakeboats and probly a mesh box that locks for wetsuites and harnesses etc
this is about all ive come up with so far so if anybodys got more idears
please, hit me with them.

Kaos, great looking ute! How do you get the drive from the motor? Is it just a friction drive onto the wheel rim, or somehting more fancy?

semi fancy . i used the the clutch out of the wiper sniper and made up a bracket to support the friction shaft . so its an auto ( no stopping the motor a lights ),also the motor is on a lockable tilting bracket , so you can still ride ,with out the motor running on the tyre . just in case you have to stealth mode
