Do boards vary much in the amount of pop that they can give .Is the height of jumps influenced much by the amount of pop or mainly by rider’s technique?

there is a lot of difference in boards but it comes down to technique more than anything. poor technique will never get good pop even from the best board

Hah! Love it.
I had a bit of snap and crackle, now I have 4mm less ply on the top deck!

Hi Kev,

Yes boards vary greatly in the amount of tail reflex (pop). I hate the word pop!

A board with a super flexy tail will absorb the energy created by loading the tail and will not spring you off the water much at all, whereas a board with a super stiff tail will not store energy at all. It will allow you to instigate forward rolls etc better than the board with too much flex, but not as much as a board with good reflex or it's ability to return to shape once loaded.

The amount of "pop" Grrrrrr will significantly effect your height from the water in only 'kite low', loaded tricks like wake style stuff. Good technique is what is needed to boost huge when using the kite. The best equipment in the world won't make you go big if you have poor technique and timing.

I hope this answers your question.

Good winds,

can someone explain exactly what a 'pop' is..i kitesurf but since am the only one i only know how to tack turn, no transistions(still trying for that heelside) and can only jump(only learnt thru nearly crashing into people on the water[}:)])..i wish there was a better kiter that i can follow and so my learning curve doesn't get stumped..i rang a kitebuddy and he explained the railey thing but i just took it into stride cuz he kept on trying to explain the pop thing

you have 670 posts and still dont know what pop is?

well pop is generated through pushing off the water and also the tail flex in the board. you should keep your kite low for tricks like raileys, s-bends, raleys to blind(wakestyle tricks) and basics but when you get to kevin dangleree level you still pop but use the kite higher in the window so you can fit in more rotations/handlepasses (kinda stupid).

hmm but ive ridden boards with no tail flex and found they popped the best? like the LF element destroys all boards in pop! but i think the rocker has a foot in it...

ps . its funny how every1 mocks kevin now just because we braught up a topic of kitelow riding.. in his own style hes still an awsome rider with a really cool unique style doing one handed tricks n stuff. n his kiteloop 7 says alot aswell. hes just not wakestyle orientated. more newschool freestyle orientated like the rest of pkra.

i know kevin is an awesome rider. he does awesome 1 handed stuff and powered kiteloops, and normal powered freestyle, but he also does do alot of the danglree style

ewan

P.S i ride a cab custom 128 and it has hardly any flex but it has a huge amount of rocker and that helps alot to.

Yes besides the bull sh#t, it dose depend on the board, general ( single concave will; give good pop may be to much pop in chop, & or double concave good control, speed to pop. Quad speed for pop. But, the old school "singis concave will; give good pop" if you have the balls to land it.

hiya ewan basically i kite in winds below 14kts. anything above i windsurf and since am self-taught with bruises near titties, knees and shins it's a hard learning curve since there is no one to follow which is a lot betterso i guess what you're trying to imply is pushing your back foot hard as the kite is in the most powerfull window to make a self-made wake to spring up fromi have one of those old lab rats to go with a 12ckite and a contra 14...really don't know if these are good for popping the labrat that is

No one is doubting that Kevin is good and nobody cares how low the kite is because its freestyle, the thing that Kevin Dangleree lacks is the fluidity and style of some of the other top riders. I think with the kite too high he overcooks it and after his 3 spins and handlepasses he still has height and does a bit of dangling along the way.

i never said hes crap or anything. hes stil one of my favourite riders.. and yes his kite height doesnt matter because its normal freestyle/newschooly stuff like i mentioned before.. and his kite is at moderate level anyway apart from wen he goes into doubles. and yes he does dangle a bit but he just gets more time to think about sticking the landing = more comp points stacking up.. and being number 2 says his power and style etc is good. sure prefer watching him over north riders, n alvaro n stuff..

in pkra the only riders i like watching are kevin aaron and ruben, all for their different styles which are all unique and cool.

whats the deal about concave? im sure single concave doesnt give u that much more pop and actually wats the deal with double n quad concave for pop? with quad i would think u cant lock a solid enough edge in because theboard deflects alot of the water due to the deep channeling? i dont know though so enlighten me... perhaps it helps hence the quad cave tips to double or single centre alot of wake boards n the element had or the single to double on the concept..

kevinwd1, your in qld, just get to a cable park ( logan, brisbane or blye blye, sunny coast) and you'll learn quick all about 'pop'. 95% is rider technique! just go watch some good riders, and you will see. not many kiters can generate real pop most rely on the kite. want to learn wakestyle stuff....... go to cable!

There cable park he is refering to in brisbane is Logan. The other option is Bli Bli on the Sunny Coast as he said.
And yes you can use your kiteboard, however if you are going to be doing it regulary you might want something with decent rocker, it just feels so much better when you have some rocker and some decent bindings.

The cable guys realy know how to load up the rope!!

ps. I also definately recomend cable for begineers if you haven't come from a wakeboarding background, it realy helps get your board riding down pat without having to concentrate on what your kites doing. It helped my dad heaps! Also helped me with my toside switch riding.
