I used a barefoot skiing wetsuit when I first started kiting (not so long ago) they are classed as a floatation device and have got good padding , so if you get smashed its not so bad. They arent cheap but you may be able to get one second hand in the quokka or ebay.
Yeah i'll second that! I've got a barefoot style wetsuit that I use and its the ants pants ! #its got "summer" warmth # its padding softens wave slams on the side, Acting as an impact vest # it has bouyancy !!!
SOS has some impact short johns (no arms and short legs) that were made by oniel for wakeboarding. Very floaty. They also have some impact vests. Some with drink bottles, some without. All chosen to stay out of the way of your harness hook and all provide good floatation.
If you do some research and find what you think is best, let the forums know!
I've just started wearing a 'Cabrinha impact chest' - the impact vest with built in waist harness. Extremely comfortable, absorbs a bit of shock during stacks and provides a bit of flotation (but not a designated PFD). Pretty hexy though, about $250 - my only criticism is the stitching - which is crap! - has started to separate in several places.
Am using a wakeboarding bouyancy vest (Made by seasuits but with a different label purchased from Ellis water ski centre...are they still around??) in conjuction with my seat harness. All fits together fine. Good bouyancy, good impact protection and doesnt get in the way. Wakeboard style have really large arm holes so the don't restrict your movement.
