the 17 fuel is probly faster but the 16.5 contra would have more power

Assume you are buying used?
Provided they are both in good condition, the Contra would be fisrt choice then the Fuel, they were both OK kites for their time.
Even better as a light wind kite though would be an 06/07 Contra 17M bow, or a 16M CB1 or SB1.
I really like my SB2 16M as a light wind machine now that I have it rigged with a 60cm bar, and 30M lines.

Hey Scott, how light are you planning to kite in? I used to have a 16.5m Contra - while it has heaps of power, the turning speed is pretty poor like with any big kite which is really frustrating for surf and wave riding - I'm pretty sure you are lighter than I am and you always ride surf boards - maybe you should try out a new 15m Fuel - I think you may be pleasantly surprised (and you could give me a ride so that I could have a go ). The turning speed and power through the turns would be much better on the Fuel than the Contra.

Turning speed will be the most critical... Just need that something extra for when it's bloody 11-16kts...

Yeah, it's been bloody frustrating lately - I reckon a 15m Fuel should get you going in those conditions - see if you can demo one.

Whose Link was that you were riding on Saturday?

Cheers
Nick

That would be mine! It works unreal! I'm all frustrated and looking for a bigger kite but I was riding a 4'6" surfboard that day... On Sunday I stole some straps from Dustin and now have my 6'2" ready to rock. Small kite, big board right????

you wouldn't have had much trouble this arvo

went out at 5pm and had 20 to 25kts for an hour until the rain hit - bust a fin off my board though did a front roll and did an unintentional kite loop at the same time - still had loads of fun though

How much do you weigh skeggs?? The pros and cons, first does the fuel have 5th line? If so it will have good range and turning speed, plus easy relaunch. Contra would have bridal and is a big kite probably more power than fuel, but slower turn. The fuel will be the stronger kite allowing you more freedom to dump it in the waves.
There is always the link 15, turns fastish for a big kite with heaps of power. Although the fuels this year are incredible lots of power and great bar response and feel.
There are bargains out there for older model big kites 17.5m machines etc good luck and try to get a demo on what your after best way to really know for sure..

I'm 77 kgs soaking wet... I'm really leaning toward a fuel or a link for the durability and quick turning in the surf. I've got a 12m Link already so a 15m link maybe the go. Just not sure how much more punch it will really have over the 12.......

It has a lot more punch then the 12 surprisingly, but does turn a bit slower, big for a 15m kite hey. Try to get your self a demo on one.
