I have a 9m Convert and I've snapped 2 depower straps in 2 months ? presume this is uncommon ?

What am I doing wrong ? seems its been a windy/gusty season

Wondering whether I am over using the device ? Lately I have been punching out the stopper and using without

I think I need a smaller kite

Not sure where it's snapping, but if it is the webbing strap as I am presuming I have a couple of questions for you.
1st have you cut off the neoprene cover that shrouds the strap?,if not cut it away as it is a sand/salt trap and will degrade your strap and your webbing buckle.

. Do you clean your lines down after every session with fresh water, you should?

Are you wave riding and over running your kite causing it too snap load the lines?

other than faulty equipment and above points it's all just a guess really mate.

the same thing happened to my sb3 bar the other day.

does anyone know if just the depower webbing can be replaced or is it a new bar??

yes the webbing de power strap can easerly be replaced.contact your local Cab dealer to get you one they are about $45 if you need I can send you one. The strap on the 2008 sb3 and convert was prone to wearing through because of sand getting caught under the neopren cover and all up in the buckle where the strap runs through. The cover can be simply cut off so you can wash out all the sand properly. The new 2009 cabrinha kite bars have the same de power strap system without the neoprean cover and I have not seen one snap yet.

Hope this helps

Hi Flux

yes it is the webbing
no I don't wash after every session, but do rinse sand and crap off with seawater after winding in the lines and a weekly freshwater with (some amoural too keep webbing in good cond and reduce friction - could this be cause ?)
no, I havn't removed the neoprene, I cant see how this would cause rubbing as it covers the knot only ??

I do some wave riding and have over run the kite but I wouldnt of thought too many times to cause snapping ?

good to hear the new kite bars have the problem solved

Monkfish, the neoprean cover I am referring to is above the one that covers the knot you mention. Its the one just bellow where your front lines fork out and cover's up the buckle that makes the de power strap work. No matter how good you wash your bar under the tap you will not get the sand out that causes the webbing to fail unless you peel back the neoprean cover and wash out the buckle.

When you buy the replacement de power strap system you get the whole assembly.

It's pretty straight forward and easy to replace you just need to know how to tie a bow line to attach your new de power assembly to your old de power main line.

Regards

Luke

Thanks KA

I will replace and remove neoprene as you guys recommend
but if this webbing is made in china, I suspect 3 depower straps in 3 months (dont buy chinese tie-downs if you value you surfboards)
yep, know the bowline

been through more than 5 of these over the last three years........ Probably over use it but love riding overpowered and using the trim strap to make upwind easier... IMO it is not the neoprene sheath trapping the sand which causes the problems ( although it doesnt always help ) it is sand on its own .....as the teeth of the buckle begin to wear the strap..... the strap begins to fray ..tiny particles of sand tend to stick deep within these now loose fibres and each time you use the trim the sand is forced between the teeth and the strap... speeding up the problem.... the only solution is to keep your bar out of the sand ( put it on kite or board ) and also give it a rinse before you adjust the strap ( this works best before the strap begins to show signs of fraying once it has started and the sand is embedded it is almost impossible to remove.

I have not had this problem either but 2 of my mates have snapped theirs(just like you did).

I would say it is common.

It should be replaced under guarantee as a known problem!
