I've always rode cabrinha.
But where I ride I'm the only one that
rides it. Just out of curiosity do any other
Cabrinha users not bother with the leash unless riding
unhooked? I can't see the point in using it.

Your lack of common sense would contribute to why Cabrinha kites have a reputation of loving trees. Think about it.

The Cabrinha ''safety'' system is quite unconventional compared to the rest of the market, that's for sure. When connecting your leash to the designated hook above the chicken loop, the leash may seem useless unless you ride unhook like you said, but it would also be handy in case of accidental unhooking of the chicken loop, which happens...So I guess you should wear the leash for that reason only.

The way I teach beginners to transform the Cabrinha safety system into a conventional safety system is to detach the Velcro strap on the chicken loop which will uncover the 0-ring at the end of the safety line. Connect your leash directly to that ring (safety line). This way it will act like any other safety systems out there, i.e. Step 1: leg go of the bar, Step 2: Activate chicken loop quick release (which should flag the kite out instantly with no power, but it's not always the case on Cabrinha kites) and Step 3: activate the leash quick release to get rid of the kite.

I hope this makes sense.

^^^That only works on 2010 and 2011 Cabs, the IDS and IDSX models, it does not work on the models prior to them. Clipping the leash to the ring at the end of the IDS line is ok, but it can lead to other issues, like premature wear of the IDS line due to it dangling and rubbing on edge of the black centreline, so keep an eye on the condition of the IDS line if you do this.
On 2102 and 2013 there is a new short leash that can be used, it is literally about 40cm long, good idea and design if you don't unhook. If you don't use a leash on the 2012 and 2013 kites you will lose the chicken loop if you active the primary chicken loop RED QR. You cannot activate the IDS unless you operate the primary chicken loop RED QR, and you cannot ditch the kite completely until the primary chicken loop RED QR is activated.
Its all online at the cabrinha site here www.cabrinha.com/index.php?option=com_ckvideos&view=detail&playlist_id=BF0722370A8DF08E&Itemid=233
And here for older kites

Yeah you obviously haven't used the new cabrinha
Kites mate. The system is awesome.

The idea of the leash is to make it easier to reach..... when its dangling from a branch!

I smell a troll.

But, the purpose of the leash is as backup to the donkey dick. In light conditions if you pull in too hard on the bar the chicken loop can come off the hook and the donkey dick can disengage and you end up riding unhooked. If it happens fast enough or you're not experienced at unhooking it can be bye bye kite.

In the old days I have become separated from my kite a couple of times. Now, it would come unhooked 4-5 times a year. I can't remember the last time the bar got pulled out of my hands but it has happened.

I discovered unhooked riding, my first Railey on the beach with a 6M Naish Raven.

Agree I smell a troll but if not: dude the safety it's in case ****! you don't plan for that, it happens that's why you always hook your safety always. BTW i hope you are insured too cause a wandering kite can cause a lot of damage...

i can understand why he rides without a leash. The system still works exactly the same without one and a leash is only needed for unhooking with the newer cab systems.

If un-leashed is the latest kitesurfing trend...I'm In.

I'll be riding, un-strapped / un-hooked & un-leashed.

Just a word of warning... if no leash then your insurance might not cover you as you could be judged to be in breach of your policy: Unsafe practice, not taking steps towards being safe, disregard of manufacturer's warning... they could phrase it a hundred way and their could be legal ramifications... I'm thinking it could be the case like if a car specs are not declared to be other that the manufacturer's settings they can just disregard the policy as a breach of contract. I'm not a lawyer but insurances are not the most generous companies around... so...

Nope. ^^^

I don't believe in using fake names,
unlike some folks who frequent this forum.

I don't use stupid death-leashes either.
They are totally retarded in surf.

Death-leashes kill.

its a good idea to use a leash, a run away kite can injure innocent bystanders. you should think about others saftey aswell.

well said

The number 1 reason. If you don't care about your own saftey, or the cost of your kite. Your kite can and will at some point become unhooked, trust me it will happen. If the kite then tangles up on someone down wind, it wont be pritty.

Please for the saftey of the people down wind of you, use a leash!
