Can somebody tell me if this is actually real...

if so, would it also apply to Pt Douglas? How long does it last, how long has it been on for???

I think i'm going to visit a friend up there soonish

I can vouch for it.
Often a bit lighter than what is predicted but it just means you throw up your 12.
Spent 2 months there last year and was kiting no less than 5 days a week.
Yorkies creek mouth, oh sweet butter heaven !!!!

Yep, i've got a few crews of sign installers up there at the moment.

They winge to me everyday about how 'the wind never stops up here'.

Unappreciative tossers

Trying to con my boss into flying me up there to 'CHECK' how the jobs are going. you know, like QA.

I am headed to Cairns ( Yorkeys ) on Wed for 5 days kiting. I have been watching the Cairns graph ( and foaming at the mouth ) for 6 weeks and 20 -25 seems to be the norm.
Port Douglas should have the same winds as it is not far away at all I think about 40 min.
Thats the wind covered now I just have to worry about the occasional croc and the jellies.

<- Laurie, this smilie isn't sad enough, it should have tears positively flowing out of its eyes.

I want to be on Green Island, with my 10m, right now...

Yes, that could be real. They call it trade winds. Quite depressing if you sit in cold Melbourne.

Just found the following from a local kite shop. So looking at tickets now. In a couple of weeks time i think, 1 week or 2... mmm what a dilemma.

windswell.com.au

Quote:
"The Tradewinds blow from the South East (meaning from the bottom right of the photograph up to the top left). They can blow all year but are more consistant and stronger during the winter months, from June to August (also our dry/whale season).

The Great Dividing Range that runs along the east coast, acts as a wedge and funnels the Tradewinds up the coast and ridges the high pressure systems upwards as they come across from the Great Australian Bight.

Once the winds get to Cooktown they can escape and travel across the Cape. The Trades get stronger and more consistant just north of Cairns - in fact it's always 10-15 knots stronger at Lizard Island (some 110n miles north of Port)."

Don't want to dampen anyones enthusiasm when planning trips, but.......... good old yorkies (and surrounding beaches) haven't really got anything more than 15 to 18 knots most days. We also seem to be getting 2 days of good SE or ESE and then a dud with a SSE wind direction (to offshore and gusty). Still, I will gladly accept anything that comes our way, just hasn't been the 'normal season' we usually get.

Mind you, Green Island gets pretty close to what is displayed on the graphs, just has a bit of a problem getting to the beaches consistently.

I do hope that if you head up our way , you get good winds.

Cheers

The great barrier reef gets its name for a very good reason, it's a barrier to all sorts of wet bumps making it to shore. Don't know if you remember the recent Tsunami no-show a few months back - whether it was panic merchanting of the highest order from the media, or the supreme invulnerability of the GBR protecting us - we may never know, but one thing is for sure Waves and TNQ are not found in the same sentence. Our only experiences with barrels comes from wineries.

Your best chance for swell is probably Wonga Beach about 15 mins north of Port Douglas. There's sometimes waves at Palm cove, but you will need to launch from Clifton, and it can get technical.

If you want to see what Green Island is like, I shot some footage last year. http://web.mac.com/boxburg/iWeb/Site/Kiteweek06day2.html
Looks like the trades have come back in some respect, but it has been a sketchy start to the season to say the least. As Captn Gumby has mentioned, it blows dogs off chains all day every day at Green Island, but inshore it's a little more unpredictable. But kiting erratically is better than not kiting at all.

Thanks for the feedback, I had delusions of going out for multiple sessions per day, morning/lunch/arvo. But it seems that the wind isn't like the graph indicates. Thanks for the feedback, I know what to expect now.

Cheers

Having said all that, yesterday was a cracker - about 30 kites up at Yorkeys and the wind was consistant from about midday onwards.

bugger all beach to launch from at trinity, but yorkeys is not too far away. dont be worried about crocs or stingers at this time of year
the pub at trinity beach is well worth a look though, and there is a cable park 10 mins away if there is no wind
