Hi All

Heading to Palm Cove for a week on Thursday. Just got back from 5 weeks in Switzerland, Italy and the SOuth of England (Brrrrr).

Dario tells me that Yorkys Knob is the place to Kite up at Cairns.

Just wondered if there is any kiting done at Palm Cove itself. I won't have a car so it would be convenient to kite at Palm Cove if possible.

Hi Fitzy.
Finished my board. Turned out great and rides pretty well.. im so stoked. Test driven at the alley last week in a 15knt NE (odd for winter). Both me and Richo have been pretty unlucky on the wind front... Just cant seem to make it after work. Anyway off the vanautu in 3wks ,...bring on the tradies.

I went there a few times but never kited there. You may have some issues with a thin strip of beach and lots of palm trees, might have to get an assited launch at high tide. I think the beach is a little sheltered from a SE.

There is a local bus which goes via 2 other beaches then to yorkeys. Wouldn't be more than about 25min at the most.

Thanks Dave. Will lug my gear up there just in case. Would be pretty pissed if I didn't take it and the conditions were favourable.

Hi Scotty. Good news that the board turned out OK. Did you manage to make it with hollow sections inside like the ones I have made to save weight and give some flex?

I have just finished citting out a huge tandem board. WIll finish it when I get back from Cairns. I reckon it would be a blast for a new kiter to hitch a tandem ride on a board just to get the feeling. Should be a good chick magnet too!!!!

See you if there is any wind about this week

Hey Fitzy,

We checked out Palm Cove when we were doing the trip, and found launch was a mjor issue as well as being nothing special, ie choppy brown water. There are too many tourists around Palm Cove to make it safe to kite there. Anything is possible, but at what price...?

If you can hook a lift to Yorkeys, thats where the action is. Not too many places to kite around Cairns itself bar the known locations. There is also Port Douglas just up a ways which is the pick of the locations, but not by much.

Have fun

Thanks Kitehard.

Have had a few calls re the Cairns area all suggesting Yorkys as the closest and best spot. Guess I will just "Rent A Wreck" so I can drive there at will.

I hired several cars while in Europe and managed to completely trash a brand new Ford Mondeo. Serves the dickheads at Hertz for renting me one to drive around the Amalfi Coast. They should have given me a micro car. The drivers there are just nuts, the roads are badly congetsted and VERY NARROW not to mention the thousands of Lambretta and Vespa fiends. No wonder Italy produces the best Bike Riders. A three year old Italian boy's first images are of the traffic flying by through the perspex windshield of his dad's motor scooter while he sits precariously perched on his dad's knee. They are insane.

I left the car parked in Sorrento for several days and it just deteriorated further each day. Front and rear ended and side swiped by a truck. Completely rooted. I had to get the guards and bumpers wired on with Zip ties to drive it back to Milan.

So Rent a Wreck it will be for me in Cairns!!!!
