Can 2 people, 2 kiteboards etc fit into a Mazda MX5 for a road trip?

Im looking into buying a used car.

also looking at good old Honda civics, VW golf and VW polo. Maybe a peugeot.

I'm spending 3k-8k.

It must be a pretty crappy mx5 for that price. 2 seater, don't think it would be a good choice if you are doing a road trip. You might get 1 board & 2 kites but not much more. No suitcases, only. Go for something a bit bigger.

I had a ford Capri a few years ago, and would fit mine and my mates gear in, however did have a very small back seat that helped but still depending on the length of ur board you will prob be ok!
U could maybe get the boot roof rack things?

Consider the Honda Integra.

I bought one new in 1994 when I was single, got married, had 2 kids and it is still my daily car.

Fold the rear seats down and you can get a tonne of kiting gear in the back.

You mentioned a Civic - I'm a big fan of the EG civics (92-98 i think)... You can easily get 2 people and a quiver of kites + surfboards each in the back of that... and it'll be cheaper, and more comfy than the MX5...

I saw a red P plater with her MX5 teetering down the side of the Bruce highway yesterday... Woulda been fully squished if she rolled it...

I drive a 96 hona civic, with the back seats down you can fit 6' 3' long boards diagonally across, or two people and surf kite gear.

I may mention it has to be fuel efficient/inexpensicve in every way as its primary role is work transport.

Yes you can fit fit 2 kiteboards in MX5, but one of them has to drive!

Ha ha LOL .... sorry salt, I didnt mean to appear angry .......you first post was misleading as you asked about a car suitable for 2 people + Gear for a road trip......

Had you asked : Which of these cars is suitable as a town runabout cheap on fuel that will easily have me mistaken for

a) an enthusiastic mardi gras participant ?
b) a petite female Asian student ?

I could have easily answered the question....... all of them .


In all seriousness you will get a much better car, much better value for money with better resale by buying a 2000-2004 commodore or falcon on gas.

It will have the same amount of k's as the civic, but on a 6cyl eng as opposed to 4cyl.......be about the same on fuel ( on gas ), parts are dirt cheap and easily available both new and second hand and resale will be better.

You just have to live with the social stigma of driving a dunnydore or falcoon.

The above being said....steer clear of the capri, mx5 is ok and Hodas are in the most part very well built and have a reputation for build quality, but at the end of the day 150,000km of a 4cyl petrol is getting up there, and your resale at 200,000km will be next to nothing.

I'll knock the Honda Jazz for one of the so called features you have listed.

Continuous variable auto transmission, because of this feature I highly recommend you DO NOT change your own battery. There is a very long winded procedure (some of which involve operating temperatures, vehicle speeds and accessories switched to correct positions) to do it correctly because of this transmission!!!!!!

Lovely transmission when it's working properly but get your cheque book ready for when it sh#ts itself!!!!
