Question can someone please explain as to why new kite prices are so high and trades so low?????

I was considering upgrading my gear ,that was until I contacted the store about the purchase, and trade.
I was told that I should sell my gear private as I would get a better price,(my gear is not old its 2010) how am I to support the store when told this, all I wanted was to get a fair price for my trade and I would have handed over the cash there and then for the new gear.
if I wanted to sell my gear private I would not have wasted my time driving to the store.
Now I think that I am better off buying on the internet from overseas.and selling private as I dont want to give them my money now.
Who else has had this happen to them or is it just me that thinks its bad customer service.

That's my rant for today, bring on the wind

just not kite shops.
go trade your car in and you will get stuff all
they have over heads etc etc so its clear cut they cant give you top dollar for 2nd hand gear. and its hard for shops to sell off 2nd hand gear when you have noobs posting **** kites on ebay for other complete noobs to bid on than break their legs

Sometimes the price YOU think your gear is worth is nowhere near the price that a shop would pay for it, taking into account that they need to make $$$ and wont move your gear for a while if it's off season or poor cond.

So for example say you had a 2010 switchblade 10m RRP in the day $1500
In good condition private it would get $600-$800 max on a good day
Shop would trade this for you for 400-500 and then make their cut by selling it for $700-750

So sometimes a shop is better off telling you to sell private as what you want for it compared to what they can sell it for is a big difference. Additionally most kites wholesale are a 100% mark up for retail.. Eg a core GTS for example $550 kite only (wholesale) +GST goes for $1200 retail.. Give or take.

So what would a shop rather buy? A secondhand kite or a new one wholesale to sell retail for the same $$$$

The shop was trying to make you more money by telling you to sell private. Sometimes the truth is hard to hear when it comes to the toys you have spent your $$$ on.

Tell us your 'fair price' you wanted for your gear and I'll tell you if you are on the money from a shops perspective. Also tell us what kite it is and cond pls.

unfortunately kites are like undies. once you use em and stain em nobody wants them!...

Seriously lies don't last long. be prepared for 50% depreciation per year.

So $2000 retail
1year $1000
2years $500.
3years $250 so forth and sp p

So what your saying is that it is ok for the kite shop to rip us of with a 100% mark up on a new kite and then give a low trade.
Then put it up on the buy & sell section and make a 100%profit on our trades

So $1000 profit for the new kite and
$ 300 profit on our trades.
That's $1300 profit and you say that its ok

I think that is an insult to the kiting community. Makes me more keen to buy from overseas

aahh yellow your maths are wack.

assuming the above pricing is correct
$550+gst call it $600. sells to you for
$1200
trades your kite for $500. So far he has made only $100 and has a old kiting sitting on the shelf. Thats enough to feed the kids for half a week.

Now he has to move that kite to get his profit margin. It takes him 2 months to sell it and he ends up flicking it for $450 to get in out the door.

he's made $550 on a $1200 item which is good margin. but its taken him 2 months to free up the cash. thats cash he needs to pay the rent, power, chinese hooker, and buy more kites for the next punter.

selling kites is a tough business.

plus he sells you old worn crapper to a dude wanting a cheap and the damn bladder lets go the first time the guy buys it. The shop owner being a good bloke shouts the dude a new bladder for $65 and thats his chinese hooker for the week and he is not happy. Thus he suggests to you to sell it yourself.

if i smoked 20-a-day that'd be $30x365=~$10k a year
if i was a 2-cartons-a-week p1sshead, that'd be $5k a year.
hookers - what are they, $500 an hour?
<$3k gets me 3 new kites a year on easy trade-in. the wind is free.
each to their own.

While you are reading this, just cast your eyes around the room you are sitting in, just about everything you look at will have had similar margins from the manufacturer to a retail customer, nothing new here since the industrial revolution started

How many $$ have you shelled out for bottles of drink in the last year, coke, redbull, beer, wine or water, the cost to manufacture and what you paid are to completely different things.

90% of first time business people also think it aint fair to charge to much so they start a new business and think they will change the world and make a killing yet the statistics say they fail in the first year because they couldn't make enough money to pay the rent, There is plenty of bills to pay out of that margin you think is a lot

Opps I think I just wasted my time explaining, I just looked in your profile and see from a few pics you made a harness out of what looks like garden hose WTF
Man you will enjoy the sport a lot more if you bought a real one

What a Complete useless kook of a tool....

Why don't you buy your electricity overseas, your petrol and your families food...?
Surely you can get it cheaper, and the multi nationals you get it from now probably won't feel a thing...

A family run kite biz gives you a heads up and says sell your gear privately for more cash than we can afford to trade it for, and when you're ready we'll talk turkey...

We'll cut you the best deal we can..

And you think they are trying to rip you off..l

with every post you make, I Regret stopping you from using that 20yr old surfboard leash you attached to your twin tip and had your missus strap to your ankle the first time you turned up to the beach... nevermind your mongoloid looking mate who sits in the carpark for all hours In the company work ute smoking drugs and freaking out the locals, telling them he's a kitesurfer after they have been watching him sit for hours with the motor running in the carpark with plumes of smoke coming from the drivers window...i

If I owned the kiteshop you're trying to dis here on the net, I'd have you beaten to a ridiculous bloody pulp the next time you tried to walk into my shop...

But knowing the family that you are crapping on, for who they are...
They'll still do their best to cut you a deal..

Just remember, when your stupid kids can't get a job, it's cause of people like you...

Doc.....You are an entertaining read, that's for sure.pmsl
Agree 100%...Kite shops or any shops don't only sell products they give advice ( and that is free ) or is it?
I have been to a kite shop and I talked to this guy for the best part of an hr.I got some great advice, was shown different type of kites ,boards etc and I will definitely be taking my business there in the near future.
His time = 1hr = $60 (includes super,power,etc)
If he does this 2 or 3 times a day= $180
That is a wage, and no profit yet...Someone has to pay for that.
So when I hand over my hard earned cash I know it is going to someone who earned it the hard way.

... i wonder if you'll still be able to user your donger after a powered kiteloop when strapped to this harness. Unhooking seems to be a bit of a tricky business too

Dude, you can pick up a used harness in good condition for about 50 bucks here on SB or on fleebay.

I take it you have never been to Cash Converters and tried to offload things you no longer want or need? Or traded in a car? In both instances you will get less than the market rate for your goods/car. Why?

Think of it this way - the company taking your old thing in trade is offering you the certainty of receiving some money or a discount on a new product in return for the opportunity to make a profit themselves from the second hand goods. Why should they do all the hard work (and take on the risk of not selling the item at all) in return for no benefit? A kite shop is not a charity!

For something like a kite, I look at the purchase price of the kite as being 100% non-recoverable - ie. If I pay $2k for it, that's $2K I'm not going to see again ever. And to that end - I look after my gear but I don't upgrade every season and make it last as long as I can. The reality is most of us aren't good enough to require the latest and greatest every season.

I would have done the deal, good to find a Kiteshop that will trade your gear, most of the time you have to wait to sell it before you can afford new gear "well me" at least and then you end up flicking it for the same or less.
