Was just wondering why you can't (according to WAKSA website) kite at Brighton or other such spots in Perth when its blowin SE.
When its blowin SW its easy to ride perpendicular to the beach, straight out and straight back in to the same spot. Because u are riding both out and back again, whats the difference whether its SW or SE?
I havn't noticed if people are riding in those winds coz I never bother goin down when its SE.
If anyone is riding then, can you notice the difference?
Its bound to make for better wave quality!

So its only a problem if your going a fair way out and need to self rescue?
Surely if your just wave riding (not that far from the shore, so you could swim in with kite if all goes wrong) then its possible to still ride perpendicular to the beach and back?
Or is it just not worth the risk?

You may remember the incident last summer at Swanbourne when a mate got into trouble when his safety failed to release. He only just made it due to several pieces of good fortune. The main factor in the incident was that the wind had just swung slightly offshore when the incident happened hence he was dragged out to sea. If it had been cross or onshore there would have been far less of an issue. ie it's on your head but if things go pear shaped you'll be in trouble especially as there's unlikely to be any other kiters around to help.

No worries I'll be giving it a miss then.

Good to hear from guys who have done it (and survived) rather than find out myself the hard way.
Guess Im just gettin a bit desperate after poor winds all week and seein plenty of strong SE arrows.
Will have to hold out another day or so.

If you really want to kite a SE:

Lano - Eddies works but be prepared to lose your kite. Cross-off.
Wedge - Beachies will work. A little gusty but cross-off.
Secret Harbour - Cross-off.
Abrohlos - Heaven on a SE.
Rotto

Don't do any of the above if you're inexperienced in the waves or self-rescue. I wouldn't advise it if there is no swell cause otherwise the reward (being out there by yourself) is not as satisfying.

Nick's right - check out Esperance. Generally awesome when it's troughed out in Perth (i.e 35 degrees and above). You get some awesome conditions down there.

If it's SE it's going to be gusty but if you're willing to accept that then you're going to have fun.

I would have thought so, it'd be cross-onshore, with most of Melville water upwind so not gusty???

SE at brighton is cross-off. So if something goes wrong (i.e. when you are at the end of your tack and a few hundred meters off shore) then the next stop can be... Indonesia maybe on a SE'er

Try West India. That new Google Earth is amazing I heard.

Anyone ever try going out on the offshore when the onshore is predicted for later? You could do the whole thing as a 'downwinder'.[}:)]
