Heading to the desert and taking a lot of expensive camera and lens equipment.

It is not ideal to leave gear in the car however if I could buy a car safe device to keep the goods safe and chained up that would be ideal.

Does anyone have one or recommend such a device?

Never had a need for one but they are usually a bit small for too much camera gear.

I'd just spend a couple hundred bucks on a half decent alarm, and get contents insurance that will cover it. Enough to deter most scum and your ass is covered if it's not.

I've got a sticker that reads "Nothing in this car is worth your life". Probably doesn't help but I like it.

Sci,

I dont know what sort of car you have but I have a Navara dual cab with canopy . The back of the tray is fitted out with slider racks (bought it like that). These lock and then the tail gate locks as well. Pretty secure set up. But expensive. I found a receipt in the glove box for 2 grand

Im about to cross the continent in about 2 weeks with a ****load of camera gear and computer gear, and the rest of my house in a trailer. Im not sure what kind of theives you are thinking you might encounter out there, but theres no way I'll be walking too far from my vehicle or camp site, been lost once in the Barrington Tops national park when I was 3 years old for 24 hours, gotta love those Wild Turkeys , I followed them to safety (eventually) and the last time about 18 months ago, I got 2 flat tyres and a flat battery, had battery back up though, but had to go down to the local tyre joint in Gloucester twice. be more worried about your back up equipment for survival and just insure your gear. Now I always carry two spare wheels and three batteries and a 1000 watt inverter generator. I drive a falcon, so not really suited for rought terrain like the tops can get, but Im quite an experienced bushy

Have you thought about using Pelican Cases?
carryitcases.com.au
These are both dust and water proof, so great for sensitive electronic gear.
They have inserts for padlocks, but if you have a few of them, a stainless strop locked to the vehicle and the cases will be very secure.

Why not nick around to Bunnings and pick up a regular home type safe for about $150 and bolt it to the floor in the boot of the car.

http://www.bunnings.com.au/search-products.aspx?search=safe&searchType=any&searchSubType=products

If you do this be very careful how you bolt it down. Had a stereo company install an amp into my car once and screwed the earth wire into the fuel tank. The tank had to be drained, removed and then welded back in.

I have insurance to cover some of my camera gear but not all of it. It gets pretty expensive if you cover all of it. Maybe you could get a pelican case and lock it up with a bike chain to something secure inside the boot???

EDIT: Sorry didn't read the last post.

I have a small safe in my car which is cable attached (from Bunnings $25). It's good for phone, wallet etc. It's about A5 size. Probably not big enough for camera gear.

I know it's not Aussie but I recently bought a stackon safe from amazon.com
I was very impressed with the prices (even after the postage was included).
I couldn't find anything like this from around where I live....

http://www.amazon.com/Stack--PDS-500-Drawer-Safe-Electronic/dp/B002KEIU4W/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1317444084&sr=8-2

I bought the drawer safe - I know it won't be big anough to fit anything like what you are after, but still a great safe to keep everything safe down at the beach!

I think all up delivered it was about $70

Hey dude! got a safe in the vano, bolted 1 million times to the floor with flush round heads under and the bolt inside - like a dyna bolt, car insurance is cr a p better off with travel insurance for your trip - covers a bit - look around for better policys vero is good.

when i head out kiting i have a surflock style key safe with only the service key that opens one door - if you have an older car you can take your key to a key joint and get them to do a rough job - they will open the door locks but not the ignition if they do a rough job - then hide the real key inside. works a treat.
