I was doing a down winder from CB to Brighton yesterday and passed some fishermen at the pipe, but didn’t fall off or go too close in because of them.

About 50m downwind of them, I felt a yank on my arm and I was snagged on my elbow by a fish hook on a line. I left my board and body dragged in like a hooked fish. Luckily the hook hadn’t gone up to the barb as it poked the elbow bone, so I got it out my arm but had to rip it out the suit. When I got to the beach there was also a different size one with a sinker attached round my foot, which I also had to tear out of my suit.

The worst is, I don’t know where they came from – whether they were from a fisherman casting at me or whether they were from a lost line floating in the water – if it was from a lost line, how did it get to my elbow when I never fell off?

Can anyone doing a down winder at the time throw any light on this, although I am not sure I should ask, as I probably did something stupid?

The same thing happened to me when i was kiting in a river the line was under water and my board caught it and as i went the oposite direction the fishinline was forced to run up my body as it had no where else to give the slack from the tesion of the line. Luckily i noticed the line before i hit the hook and turned around to go up wind avoiding the line.

^^^^I have been out fishing on the pump jetty and saw some old fishos putting on the biggest bomb sinkers they had, with no hooks, and try and cast as far as they could aiming at surfers.
They thought the surfers were spooking the fish.
FRUCKERS

aahhhhhhh the Gold Coast,
beautiful one day,
full of d!ckheads the next.

Best thing I ever did was move away from the tourist strip to northern n.s.w.
Not much fun in the pub on State of Origin night though in my maroon jumper surrounded by a sea of angery blue jumpers

Not sure if it's overkill but I know Military Helicopters (ie the UH-1 Iriquois) have special hooks just above the cockpit to sever any powerlines they may fly under, so they don't take out the rotor assembly. You may be able to mount a couple of hook knives on the front of you board, that way if you happen to kite through the lines, it slices them away and the fisherman is none the wiser ;-)

You could also carry a hook knife on your harness to get rid of the line on your person also.

Mate I have been pretty wary of fekin orf away from the pipe whenever i see a fisho casting for that very reason!

Pretty sure the odd fisho has cast in my direction but no bites yet!

I've been curious as to how far a rig might drift down if being trawled back in. A fisho would have a better idea but 50m sounds feasible to me?

There really is only a handful of diehards at the pipe now. There used to be a few dozen spread out over a fair length, so probably best to fang past there and resume smashin the mush.

Pity the fisho didn't hook the peanut on the green Flow kite doing the bodydrag of death on Tuesday arvo. He would have hooked himself a snapper(head).
