Did anyone happen to make a stop in Chumphon this most recent season? I am wondering about the frequency of kiteable winds there (or Hua Hin or Koh Samui).

I am going to Thailand from October '08 through April of '09. I know everyone points to mui nei, but I really love Thailand and have been traveling there for a little over 20 years. I realize there can be a week of wind then nothing for a week. At least in Thailand I know I can occupy myself on windless days, where as in mui nei, people say there is nothing to do when ther is no wind.

hello,
i was in chumpon last dec. and i must say the wind was great. 15 to 20 almost from 10 to 6. you actually go to thu wua len beach which is 20 minutes from chumpon.
from Bkk better to take the train and from the station, either a cab or songtaw to that beach for 1$.
i think this goes on until feb but of course can vary from season to season.
a little remote but enough restos. bungalows are cheap with ac and tv (thai only at my place ....) for about 15 $. motor bike are 5 $ a day and worth it to go to chumpon and around. there you have internet cafes, a few little shops and 2 kite schools selling cheaper equipment.
i must say this is the best place i have seen in thailand for the wind so far but of course, there could be no wind sometimes too. there are 2 spots. one with shore break and another flat one in a different bay. you can always start in chumpon early in the season and end up in hua hin later in march.

marc,

How long were you there for? What size kites were lightweight riders on? My wife is about 54 kilos?

We will take the train, it is a great way to go south. Get a sleeper car and wake up in Chumphon. I am planning on going early in the season and probably hanging out there for 6 weeks or so. I am meeting up with family in Samui for Christmas. Hope to get wind there too.

Thanks,

Mike

hello,
i am not sure when it really starts but referring to the 2 schools there, nov. and dec are the best month.
for the size, me beeing 73 kg, i would only take my 12 sle. but i guess 2 kites would be a safer bet anyway.
check those : www.kitethailand.com/
