I would absolutely love to make the entry heaps cheaper, however think about what you get for your money...

- 4 days of food
- Entry to kiteboarding nationals
- $8,000 in prizemoney
- everyone gets a prize
- live acoustic music on the beach
- beach markets
- FREE entry to a festival with bands such as the Living End, Spiderbait, The Butterfly effect and 17 other big names. The music festival tickets general admission are selling for $85 each.

If you were to see even just one of those bands you'd be hit up for $50 or more. The main issue is that we have mortgaged our houses to put on a show like this, and believe it or not, it's a non-profit event. We're just trying to cover costs, so we can continue to give something to the sport and to the Central Queensland.

The aim is to enhance the profile of kiteboarding in Australia, to keep the sport thriving and to give you more than just a competition, we want to give you an experience.

I cant believe that anyone would even question the price of this. Nationals this year was $50 bucks to ride, thats it, nothing else.

The money you spend at this event will cover you major expences for 4 days.

For a national level comp, $150 is cheap! You would pay that to compete in a national or state sailing championship, and with all the extras you get, it turns the whole thing into an event.

For people like myself (OK freerider, no interest in competing) this sort of format would make me more likely to turn up.

For guys like Ewan, sure $150 is a lot, but in Ewan's circumstance (You 14 or 15 now mate?), he should get a junior rate. This would encourage the younger guys and girls to attend and compete.

Every other year at the Coconet Classic, anyone has been able to enter, however 2009 will be the National titles which you have to pre-qualify for. Each state takes their top kiteboarders to compete, and if you miss out, there are limited wild card entries.

For those that miss out, you are still welcome to attend to watch, go to the music festival, check out the markets & bikini and boardshorts comps and hang out with your mates.

For those that kiteboard who aren't in the nationals, there is also a section on the Tannum Beach away from the competition area (Wild Cattle), where you can kite.

Thanks to everyone who have called or sent me emails in regards to the National Titles next year, it looks like it's going to a great event!

I'm still waiting on the reply from the AKSA in regards to who can qualify. From my understanding, most states (other than Qld and NSW) held state titles this year. The top performers here will qualify for the nationals, along with a wild card entry.

For Qld and NSW, those that wish to compete will more than likely have to apply as a wild card entrant to AKSA. Details would include tricks, comps you've been in, references from other kiters, etc.

None of this is official as yet, but we should have a definate answer within the week, once AKSA have their next meeting. Entries will open on our website once I have the confirmation.

Cheers,
Danielle

That's a deal breaker right there-I have no interest in comps-but for those that would like to attend the 'festival' and compete there's a disincentive if you have to qualify and it's a very small number who would qualify-that drastically limits your market-I'd reconsider that-particularly if you truly have mortgaged your house.

Hi there,

Thanks for your comment. And you're right- there will be some people that cannot actually compete. If people do want to compete though, all they would need to do is apply to be a wild card. Even if you don't compete, everyone is still welcome to kite, attend the music festival, attend the activities on the beach, and become part of the whole action. It's open to all. And you'll even save yourself entry fees!

Most kitesurfing competitions have between 50-100 competitors. We're expecting the same for the nationals. No matter how many competitors turn up, the kitesurfing side will run at a loss, as it does for all kiting comps. It's the music festival that should hopefully pay for the difference.

The AKSA needed a place to hold the nationals and we had a venue. So instead of getting rid of our kiting comp completely- we wanted to give the competitors their nationals for the year.

If you're not interested in competing- that's ok. Feel free to come down, bring your kite, meet some people and get involved in the whole weekend. We'd love you to be there. Everyone is invited :-)

Cheers, Danielle

Hey Tony,

Thanks for your message. I've just been in touch with the AKSA and they tell me that the state bodies will chose who qualifies. I'm just waiting on their email to let me know how many from each state will be selected. Preying I get something back this week! I'll let you know as soon as I have an answer.

Have a nice Chrissy!

Hello everyone!

I have a little more info from the AKSA in regards to qualifying for the nationals. (Written below). Once I have the list of qualifyers names, I'll post them on the coconet classic website under "Kitesurfing" competitions and if you're on the list, you can register by going to the "Sign Up" section. These will be online by January 15th. Visit: www.coconetclassic.net.au

From the AKSA: "As a member interested in competing at the national level, you should nominate yourself to your state or AKSA if you are not in a state association. The qualifications committees will be choosing from a number of interested riders and will need to know how competitive you are compared to others. Anything you can say or show to indicate your ability level will help the committees in their decisions. Important information in order of importance includes your contact email, phone, and address; recent competition results, references from respected and well known identities in the sport (other top riders, judges, photographers, store owners or sport officials, description of moves you can claim (please don't exaggerate), and videos, or the like. These should be forwarded to your State Association or AKSA for analysis.

Once allocations are finalised, the states will nominate approximately 5-10 riders in each of the 4 standard divisions, (Mens Open, Womens Open, Mens Juniors (under 18) , Mens Masters (over 35). Nominations close January 10th and riders will be contacted shortly afterwards."

If you have any other questions, feel free to reply to this post or contact me via email: [email protected]

Merry Christmas!

Nominations for the National Titles are open!

Just reminding everyone to contact their state body (or the AKSA if this is not applicable) by January 10th to apply to compete. If you were the top riders in a state that had national titles last year, you will automatically be selected.

Once the top riders are selected, you will be informed by the state body, and also listed on the Coconet Classic website under "Kitesurfing" competitions. Visit: www.coconetclassic.net.au

You will then be able to register and pay online.

See you at Easter!
