Over the last couple of days a few of us here in Sydney have received some aweful news about our big mate Col.
Col has sustained an injury whie kitesurfing in waves at geraldton in WA that has resulted in him losing sight in one eys and having only 70% vision in the other. He has had 2 ops, the prognosis at best is minimal vision MIGHT return to the blinded eye (he may be able to see shadows), and he may get a further improvement in the eye that has 70% vision now, over the next couple of weeks.

He has been a good mate to many people in Sydney, and has been a real and positive contributor to maintaining access on Botany bay.

Col has spent his life helping other people, so lets help him in a dire time of need.

We are going to start an appeal, and details will be posted ASAP here about how to make a donation.

Col will be unable to work for a while and may never be able to return to the surveillance work he did in Sports clubs around Sydney.
I don't even want to think about whether he will be able to kite again.

Gutted for my mate.

just spoke to Col before- for a guy that has just been hammered by the fact that there is like maybe a 5% chance of getting the sight back in his eye he sounded remarkably in good spirit, and already planning how to kite with one eye....

seems he copped a set wave the wrong way and came up thinking he had seaweed wrapped around his head cause he couldn't see properly got himself to the beach and asked big kev if he could see something in his eye. nothing there

couple of trips to the hospital, three doctors one a full on specialist, the prognosis is unfortunetely not good for him.

such a positive bastard is Col he stated he still had one good eye and he would now tone down his jumps a little. the power of positive thinking works wonders

it would be better to hear the story from the horse's mouth himself rather than have me bastardise it as i was basicly in shock myself talking on the phone.

here's to a positive outlook for Col,from me ,as he has looked out for me the last few years especially in my early days

as for the Kitepower appeal for him put me down

Sounds like a detached retina.

Best regards to Col. I don't know him but I always feel a jolt when a fellow kitesurfer is injured.

Yeh I was chatting to Col at coro and he said all he could see from 1 eye was crazy black and white TV.

He seemed Ok but I guess its alot more serious than he thought.
No joke I think he went back out kiting again too.

Sorry to hear about your eye Col

For those that want to send some money to Col just to help him out and enable him to relax a bit and get some healing time.
Click on the link above and follow the instructions.
You only need an email address to do it, having a credit card will make it faster and easier. Cols email address is cjpacker(at)optusnet.com.au take out the (at) and substitute @

Alternately, send me a PM and ask for the Kitepower bank details, we will reply with a/c details and directions to mark the donation "CJ Packer"

Or send a Australia Post money order or personal cheque made out "CJ Packer" to Kitepower Sydney or Geelong, postal addresses here www.kitepower.com.au/cart.php?target=help&mode=contactus

I will look into the possibility of opening special bank account, but this is not as simple as some people are assuming, in Australia. If I can do it I will post the details here.

I also do not want to burden Col with having to go to banks, with PayPal he can access funds online, simply by signing up himself for a PayPal account.

Col, sad to hear the news. Hopefully medical marvels will get you significant recovery. You are such a positive, supportive great natured bloke so you know this is only a hiccup - looking forward to seeing you happy face back on the water.

Well done Steve - as usual you're leading the way. I'll drop some cash into the shop next week.

Perhaps a benefit day with some raffles/silent auctions etc, will help with Col's expenses.

Hi Guys,

I spent most of yesterday with Col and the KKK crew up at Lano doing the downwinder to Wedge.

Col was in good spirits but absolutley spewing he couldn't do the downwinder. The downwinder was Col's and Kev's idea many months ago and he had been in serious training for it for months. Col and the other boys had been amping about the downwinder all week, which was the last part of their WA trip.

To have missed out on the trip was a cruel blow to the big fella. Col rode shotgun in the 4WD along the beach with my mate Azza whilst I followed the crew in the boat for the 25 k's to Wedge. Luckily Col and Azza had some good stuff in common and he had an amazing day out just enjoying the scenery and the 4WDing down the beach and through the dunes.

He kept a great attitude despite seeing everyone else out there doing "his" downwinder. I know Col and the boys will be back to maybe do it again in the future and we'll be here waiting for him to maybe do the Ledge to Wedge

The upside is that the swedish back packing chickies in the lodge took quite a shine to the big, buffed, chatty, Sydney fella wearing the glasses at night and spent some "special time" looking after him.

Col really is of "the good stuff", to quote the words of another fine old fella. I wish him well and would also like to help out with Cols' charity. I'll contact you soon Steve.

Look after the big guy, he has a bright outlook and is a great character. It was good to get to know him a bit better. See ya soon Col. The girls in WA will miss ya!

Cheers and good winds,

Col called me this morning. It was a bit difficult for me to talk to him in the shop so I went upstairs and had a quiet chat with him.

Cols says he is feeling fine and none of you should worry for him (but we will anyway!), and that he is dealing with the misfortune and just wearing sunnies day and night.
He can partially see out of the one eye and although he has some floaters and some milkiness in the eye he reckons its about 70-75% working, but at times its hard to see. His left eye has no vision.

He will be back on Monday in Sydney and has a specialist to see, also Tim Lewis's sister is a specialist too and Tim has kindly offered for Col to see his sis for a second opinion if he wants to.

I told Col about the appeal, he is a bit embarassed by it but I know he will appreciate any help you can give him!

He asked for people to understand that he finds it hard to text, and he sometimes does not feel like answering the phone, but he is loving all the support, so keep calling but maybe leave the texting for now ok mates?

Looking out my window, its 15ish and NE, Col would normally have been here to tell me where he was going out...................

If it's at all a reassurance, old One Eye
www.seabreeze.com.au/gallery/gallery.asp?imageid=8913
here has been kiting with only one eye for about 8 years now and he goes just as hard as any of us. Has a bit of trouble with inverted tricks, but I keep telling him it's not the depth perception, he just needs to try harder to get them (whether I'm right or not is another question).

Bit hard to see in that photo but the left lense of his glasses has never been cleaned. Lost his eye about 10 years ago when he sneezed once.

All the best Col.

No doubt all your support crew will be ready to help you out on the water, when you get back to Sydney.

An awful accident that will change your life, but only a guy like you will be able to make those changes positive. The impact it has had on the kiting community continues, and the response is commendable.

Thanks Steve (KP) for letting me know.

He will be back on Monday in Sydney and has a specialist to see, also Tim Lewis's sister is a specialist too and

I can highly recommend Dr Brian Harrisberg, his office is in Newtown and he operates out of Randwick. Does a lot of "elderly folk" shall we say, specialises in all types of eye surgery and lasik.

PLEASE SEE MY THANKYOU POST

and thanks all for the suggestion re specialist eye docs...

I am so impressed with the WA hospital sytem and the eye surgeon who looked after me ... excellent.

I got a couple of sessions of lazer surgery whilst in WA and will be following up with a Sydney collegue of the WA Doc....Still have no vision in left eye but right eye is improving , however, the constant stream of floaters makes things a bit difficult at times.

Once things settle down a bit I will seek out some more advice so will be in contact with those of you with recommendations.

thankyou kiters ....one and all

Col this has probably been the longest, most stressful week of your life. It was fantastic having your company on the WA mission and we want you to get well soon so you can have a reunion blast on the bay. You have plently of good mates thinking of you and wishing you well. Get well soon mate, I know you will be kiting in 2-3 weeks and I want to be there when you do. You are a legend mate and I know there are better days ahead. Best Wishes. Andrew

thanks mate, wish i knew exactly what happened but basically i got nailed by a wave and when i surfaced i couldn't see out of my left eye and my right eye was full of floaters and i had blurry vision from it. Turns out i have retina damage in both eyes. Seems like just one of those flukey bad luck things that sometimes happen. Am seeing an eye doc and keeping my fingers crossed.

THANKS AGAIN EVERYONE FOR YOUR GOOD WISHES AND SUPPORT

Hi Col,

I was devastated to hear about your kiting accident and can only imagine what you’re going through. Through my experience of disintegrating my knee doing a jump, I can empathise that your journey of recovery will require every effort, both physically, mentally and spiritually to come out the other end. After a year of rehab, it continues to shock me at the people, places, and experiences that presented me on my journey back to kiting. Fate serves us a card and it’s how you play that card that counts. From someone who has experienced an interim loss of a passion and challenged in day to day activities, please lean on friends and family for support and love and be truly open about what you’re going through. This will speed up the recovery. Take care and I’ll have a bottle of champagne waiting at Kurnell when you’re back on the water. Regards Kat (new girl on the blocks at Kurnell kiting with my new fashion accessory – knee brace).
