Sorry Guys it has been a really hard call. We are not allowed by the council to continue the comp after 6pm and have to be off the beach by 7pm each day. Sounds totally crazy but true. We have 50 competitors entered. I've been getting to Scabs at 6pm each night and having insane kites until 8.30, heaven on a kite. We need a solid 5 hours each day to run the comp, so Sunday will just kill the comp. We discussed having it Saturday and if no wind on Sunday moving the second round to another weekend, but it's pretty hard to get permission from the council, get red bull tents and all the other ****e. The Goal is to have a comp with wind, and that looks impossible this weekend. After the great conditions we have had over the last 3 weeks the comp would have been a real downer on Sunday. Apoligies to all competors / judges / beach staff and sponsers from the commitee.
A lot of people that where following the forecast on BOM would know that they where originally forecasting 13 - 18knt for Sunday. They have since upgraded and changed there forecast a couple of times.
OK , sorry about having to postpone it but I think in hindsight it was a very good move . There was some wind on Sat but no waves and on Sun there was no wind and no waves .
Like we said before this comp is for fun and to see what everybody is doing out there , we are not going to be able to do that in the conditions we had last week .
At this point we are aiming for 10-11 Feb and will hold it south of Brighton beach ,towards dog beach .
With the new dates a lot of people will have other plans so some will be able to make it now and some won't . To give us an idea of how much time we need can everybody please put down there names for the new dates .
If we have another marginal forecast we will probably go ahead with it this time ,as we can't keep on postponing, and just run what we can .
Thanks for your support and that of the sponsors at the moment we have
Brockway-Keys real estate SOS Airborne (Airush and Flying Objects) RedBull Under Suspicion clothing MayDay clothing WAKSA (paying for all judges and helping run it)
We have a few more that haven't been confirmed yet so it should be a prize fest again .
There has been further discussion and one of the suggestions is to limit the amount of entries like we did last year . This would give us more leeway in regard to time OR we could just go for some mega heats to start with like 15 man heats for half an hour and the top 5 go through . We could do the same for the second chance guys and then once we have the top 10 we run normal heats .
Please post preferences as this comp is about as many people having a good weekend on the water rather than getting a result and spending most of the time waiting for a heat .
So far the new entrants are
Johnno keys Mike Bevo Ry Glen Moora John G Corey Adam P Dan Jones Rohin Edwards Ian Y Darren Ellis Ray Q
Just looked at the Nationals wave comp info on AKSA site, they look they are pretty on it for heats and judging to get through the day with 50 plus starters. They are doing 4 man heats of 10 minute heats with 2 minute break between, you can get through 50 enteries in single elim in one day with all semis 15 minute heats. Great news is you can run comp in one day to single elim-result. If wind up day 2 you run double elim- losers round with winners meeting in 15 min semi against round 1 winners. All can be done second day in 4.5 hours.
I reckon hopping for great wind over two days is hard, getting it over in a guaranteed day with no cancellations would suit most people better.
If you look at NSW wind most days it is a 10 to 16 knots if you are lucky with surf 1 to 2 ft. They get the fronts rollin through most weeks of a day or two of 20 to 30 knots with good surf. I reckon we are pretty blessed over here with a pissy 14 to 18 knot sea breeze on our worst days, and 18 to 25 on our normal sea breezes.
I recon we plan for 1 day and day 2 is a bonus for double elim.
