I am spending a week in Sydney (Coogee Bay) and was wondering: can you kite there or where is the closest place to there that you can? Any help/advice would be appreciated.

Don't kite Coogee. I'm pretty sure kiting there is banned and with the headlands around it it probably isn't a good place to ride anyway. The best spot would be down on Botany Bay. There are a heap of spots around the perimeter of the bay that make it rideable in most wind directions. Just remember not to kite north of the bathing enclosure near Brighton as this gets too close to the airport and you run the risk of being sucked into a jet engine.

Yeah, and both Bondi and Maroubra are also both banned and/or a really bad idea.

Go to botany bay and kite where you see other kiters

Bart, welcome to Sydney!
There are many good places to kite in Sydney and like all good kiting locations, the locals know 'the ropes'. So it's good practice and commonsense to firstly introduce yourself, ask about the local conditions and rules.....adopt the advice and kite safely and unobtrusively. The most popular locations are busy.... even so, most of us are prepared to share the water and wind with considerate visitors. So your company will be 'tolerated' if you're friendly and co-operative. If you display a decent disposition, the locals may even come to your assistance if you have the misfortune of getting into trouble. Most importantly, come off the water with a word of appreciation to the locals. Praise their spot, praise their kiting, praise their practices. Do all of those things and you're guaranteed to be welcomed back the next time you kite there! Happy kiting.

Right on Frankiter ! Welcome to the local water holes Bart. Hope to see you at one of the Botany bay spots... I think you'll really like it.

Please ignore that Foxy Kane idiot. He rocked up at a couple of spots, did some really dumb and dangerous things in the water and made a real arse of himself in general. When other kiters metioned the issues he got abusive and now hates every kiter in the Kurnell/Botany bay area. Every spot I've been to around here is inhabbited by a really friendly bunch that warmly welcome anyone who loves kiting.

Our local shop is kitepower. The owner Steve is a really good guy that can point you in the right direction for any of our spots and tell you which conditions they are best in.

Hope to see you soon Bart.

Thank you for the information guys, much appreciated.

Frankiter - Don’t worry, we would expect a similar approach from anyone coming to our local spots

One last question: what is the easiest way to get to the locations, you all have mentioned in Botany Bay (from Coogee), in the absence of having a car.

Hi Bart

400 bus from RANDWICK to Rockdale Train station. Then I think the 478 to brighton le sands Grand PDE, get off at the third stop nearest a large parking bay (near childrens play area past President Ave.

This will take forever on the 400

Else you can go to central or Redfern and train to Rockdale Station and 478 or maybe 479, check with the driver for details

I know two riders who live in and around Coogee who may offer you a drive. Post a lift wanted from coogee and MAYBE they will be good enough to offer.
