I'm at Coolum on the weekend and don't know the area at all. Looks like the wind might blow a little so I'm takin the gear with me. Can anyone give me some advice on where a beginner like myself could kite? I've heard of Noosa River Mouth, Lake Cootharaba, and Coolum itself (although I have never done the surf so...). I'd appreciate just some brief advice on the pros and cons of the area spots.

PS - GOD ... Please make it blow on the weekend

Hi Malfi

It sure is going to blow this weekend according to the seabreeze graphs which you can normally rely on.
Saturday NE & Sunday NNE in the 20kt range.

The best flat water places to go would be Lake Cootharaba or Noosa River mouth which is more for an intermediate rider.

The surf is going to be fairly big on the weekend so if you're into that then get your family to drop you off at Sunshine Beach and do a downwinder back to Coolum.

I'll probably be doing a downwinder from Yaroomba to Mudjimba.

Good Luck

Thx Sunseeker. I think I'll have a go at the River mouth. I'm guessing the lake wouldn't be too good in the Northerlies due to land disturbing the wind stream.

Malfi, did you get any kiting in on Saturday up at Noosa? - it was pretty gusty and threatening to rain all the time. We still had a good down winder at about 11am but had to really hold on at times.

Hi SS. I just sneaked some in at the Noosa river mouth late on Sat. I had my brother with me and I wanted to give him a quick intro so we headed off to Lake Cootharaba. There was like no wind there so we just did the touristee drive around. It was Sat arvo and was starting to get latish so we thought we'd drop in to the river mouth seeing as neither of us had been there before. It was cranking!!! with some big squalls coming through with the showers. I politely told my brother there was no way I could give him a go with squalls, strong current and deep water. But I threw the kite up in under 10 min and had an absolute blast for 30min until the wind gave out. It's a great spot with beautiful water and sand.

Oh and I forgot. Sat Morning I set up on the beach in front of the Coolum LS Club, checked with the lifesavers if all was OK. The wind was marginal, I got about 10m out and fell over - the waves looked like 10 times bigger than what they did on the beach so I chickened out LOL. Maybe next year when my skills improve!

But the arvo at the river mouth made it all better. Best kite I've had in months. Thx mate
