Amazed to see and talk to 3 local Cott kiters who were about to set up and kite at the phone box, infact Muz was even trying to argue some ridiculous reason why he was about to kite at phone box. The council has mistakenly put up a sign at phone box saying it can be kited. The council is removing that sign today. ASked the guys yesterday if they could ask a learner to move up the beach to the kite area from phone box, and recieved a Na I'm not gonna do that, why should I.

When the Cottesloe bans us from Cottesloe it will be a sad day. Unless the local kiters get off there self-centered arses and ask the occasional new kiter to move up the beach, we will be history. The council can absolutely ban us at any moment they decide we are a bunch of tuggers, as a group we kiters are slowly proving we are a bunch of self centred tuggers.

This is very bad news, both for kiters and the Council. You are right, Cott. kiters have better get their act together otherwise there will be a ban. The saftycrats have nothing better to do.........our tax dollars need spending justifications of course. Nothing sexier than going after those "tea baggers," kiting..."what a mad sport" etc. etc.

Why can't this Cott. kiting thingy be solved with some signage once and for all? Is it a cost or org. issue? Is the Council not someone that WAKSA or Cott. kiters can communicate with?

I don't kite at Cott., but certainly would love too once I get better.

Let us not mess this up please.

Jon you have done a great job in communicating with the council and kiters in Cott and it's a direct insult to you for guys, especially local/experienced, to do what they know they shouldn't.

I'm sorry to hear the response of the guys down at Cott the other day.

If those people, or others that are kiting at Cott are thinking of kiting in areas you shouldn't, have a think about the fact that other people down there know who you are, and if there is a ban, it will be directly related back to you. Is that something you're keen to have on your shoulders?

We are in the spotlight, so if you want to be a cowboy, go somewhere where there is not going to be people watching who can possibly cause serious trouble for all kiters by putting more negativity out in the public forum.

This is a serious issue, and a house of cards. If one council decides something, then others follow suit. Is it that hard to grasp?!?! Fingers out of arses and on pulses please!

Again, respect for all the hard work done by Jon... lets hope EVERYONE down there does the right thing to make sure kiting isn't banned in Cott.

i agree
I think if we want to keep kiting at any of the spots around Perth we need to be vigilant with the guidelines that are originally put in place.
Locals are the primary people to lead by example!
we have had the same thing down at melville, and was told by one chap when 3 different people had told him to stay outside the buoys that he had been kiting at melville for 5 years and wasn't aware of the guidelines. Still he comes inside the buoys.
I suppose that we've got to continue with the safety thing, keep on plugging away and continue to highlight to "repeat offenders" that it is for their benefit that guidelines are in place.

Not only Perth,
There is ONE insurance policy that ALL WA councils have. What generally goes for one, will eventually set a preceence to go for all.

I certainly wouldn't want THAT on my shoulders....I'd liken it to having a big sign on my shoulders that reads.

"I GOT KITING BANNED BECAUSE I'M A TUGGER. PLEASE KICK MY HEAD IN IF YOU ARE A KITER THAT WAS BANNED BECAUSE OF ME"

I was not going to comment on this but it seems to be getting a bit blown out of proportion and there are a few lies that should be set straight...

1. I was never going to Kite at Ph-Box and used the same path as everone else, I just pumped up on the north side of some sign that apparently, you are not meant to pump up north of, there are no signs for this, but when pointed out I apologised and said I would not do it again. Hardly worth throwing it into a pubic forum.

2. There was not three guys pumping up, there was only me and as I said above I apologised and said I would not do it again (not sure what more I was meant to do).

3. Also, Jonathon Keys, wanted me to go and tell some guy who I have never seen at Cott and who was already in the water that he's a "fuc* Wit" for kiteing at Ph Box, To this I said I would not go and call some one a "Fuc* Wit" lets be realistic, the guy was a new comer with no idea he is doing the wrong thing, and no signs to tell him otherwise, yes, word of mouth is the best way till there are signs, but you can't go around getting excited, calling people names and then expect them to do what you tell them.

I also think it is worth noting the Irony that the problems at Cott started after an altercation between Jonathon and a resident who was diving/swimming at the phone box lagoon.

The Cott guys have done the right thing and will continue to do so.

Thank-you to the Cott Council for accommodating us.

Happy and safe kite-boarding for all.

To JK

please clarify the council position. I launch & land from Salvado st, but sail anywhere, including in front of the phone box. If people are swiming at the phone box I stay well away, usually to the north.

My understanding is that this is OK

Muz, arguing again...... sorry that no can see your point of view, a point that we fellow kiters have taken seriously for 12 months. As a new kiter to Cottesloe you may not realise the **** that has gone down in this area. You setting up at the phone box can only attract other kiters to that spot, and cause us all problems. Your blown out of proportion comment, I suppose you are right, but Muz, you can spend the next six months at every council meeting trying to help us not being banned. Muz this forum is about letting all kiters know what is going on at a spot, I posted on the forum you pumping up at Cott as a HOT reminder to all kiters to stay clear of the phone box. I spoke to council the other day, the head ranger about the incorrect signage at the phone box, and said the council were still concerned about kiters using the phone box area. Muz just stop your winging, and just stay clear of the phone box. The problems at the phone box were caused by 25 kiters using the area every day, 3-4 kiters landing on or over the road, 3 guys being knocked unconcious near the phone box, a least 5 or so beach goers being hit by kites on the beach, an old lady being hit by a kite on the side walk above the beach. Many, many kiters hiting the beach after lofting to close to the beach, infact I've hit the beach at the phone box full speed quite a few times. Many, many close incounters with swimmers and locals, over a 12 month perid. Many many aldercations between swimmers , windsurfers and locals. Mine being one of many as this old bald was swimming amoung 20 fully powered up kits at phone box, and didnt like me saying, swimming there was dangeroues for him. The kiters realised we had to move after a strong effort to ban us from the total Cottesloe shire was mounted by the head ranger and a number of local swimmers and rate payers. As a postive move by local kiters to avoid more negitive contact with public, we voted to move 70m up beach, and only kite south of rosendo st. The council has put into their local by-laws and made it law that we are now legally allowed to kite within Cottesloe shire. Within that by-law the council can at any time stop kiting totally within the Cottesloe Shire. If you read the other comments on this forum, what happened in Cottessloe will be reflected in other shires. In Sydney and Melbourne kiting has been banned at many city beaches, totally. We were lucky at Cottesloe.

Jkeys, Ive heard that it usually takes two to argue but in this case I reckon there is only one person arguing here mate. YOU.
This forum is great for letting others know what is going on our volatile sport, but tuggin the blow cord on individuals on an issue that is sport wide, and was misunderstood by yourself is a nasty shot.
Especially since the entire Kiter vs Cott Resident fiasco sprouted from your own kiting.

Those problem kitemares you speak of in great detail and obviously with much experience of your own are problems associated with every kiting location in Perth – not just Phone Box. Unfortunately, kiting largely rests on the ability for individuals to manage their own responsibilities, so how about you manage yours and don’t get both the residents and kiters of the area offside with you.
Or you could always run for the upcoming Cott Council elections…

As a gentle reminder, the rules of the forum are:

1. No abusing anybody or anything.
2. Keep it fun.
3. Keep it clean - no swearing, harrasment etc..
4. Keep it fun.
5. Keep it legal!
6. Keep it fun.
7. NO COMMERICAL ADVERTISING
8. Keep it fun!

Jkeys, you are in direct violation of rules 2, 4 6 and 8. Slap yourself across the back of your head and unplug your keyboard.

blat cat you caught me out, I was havin fun fishing with me mate Muz, I thought he might send me a nasty message on the forms, as I've been sitting here at work with a busted shoulder trying to have a little fun. Oh ah Blat cat you are so nasty, I realise every thing you say is just so............... It's all my fault and you are right I am running at the next Cottesloe election. My mandate- Ban all kiters at Cottesloe, I reckon it would take me about 4 weeks to get it passed. Ah blat cat, nice name.............. Maybe Muz I'm a bit anal about my kite spot. Sorry Muz, my sick sense of humor has gotten out of hand. I did have a pretty decent chuckle at your reply.... but blat ****ty kitty has brought me to my senses. I hear-by resign as WAKSA Cottesloe kiting safety commitee person, I just wanta kite as much as possible and not have to consider all of this pathetic **** in my busy consumer right wing- George Bush loving day. And Blat ****en cat this is all an advert for my Real Estate Company, Oh no, now the powers that be will have to ban me from the kite forum

Good on you Carl!

I think a lot of you guys are missing the point. It doesn't matter what incidents brought about the near ban of kiting to Cott... what is important is it happened and thanks to the efforts to date of WAKSA the site is still open. When it says no kiting it means no kiting, rigging ,launching, landing at a spot. Is it really so hard to walk 70 m along the beach to set up for the sake of keeping a spot open? And to stay clear of what is really a small area of beach? Come on guys think about it.

seconded...
what is the point of living in the past trying to point the finger at someone for the current situation. More importantly it is safer for all water users now there is a designated kite spot. Be thankful and do whatever it takes to keep it that way.

As the current secretary of WAKSA i have to say that kiters being allowed at cott is almost entirely due to the efforts of jon.

i know there were others involved, but jon is the man behind it all, so i sympathise with his position. he's invested a bunch of his PERSONAL time, time he could have spent kiting like everyone else...

hands up who thinks jon is doing this for his own fun!?!?!

bloody hell guys... nothing worse than a bunch of puffed up kiters letting their egos run wild on an internet forum. as bevo said... where IS the love??? what the hell is going on here...? anyone working for kiting in WA is ONLY doing what they can to make sure that we have continued access to our local spots.

geez it's a tough one to work out tho... think i might just go off the deep end and nail some people, while advertising my business as an undertone on seabreeze... now i'm having fun breaking the rules of seabreeze... what the... blatcat (who ever you are)?

now i'm keeping it fun :)

(Sigh)..., (deep breath) (sigh)....(long pause)....(deep breath)...(sigh) (scrathing crotch)...(sigh)....(smacking womans face from crotch)
There's more to life than bitching at each other. Both of you, go to a pub get a few beers...buy each other one at least. You both do the same thing and that's kite...hell you even kite at the same spot...freaky how much you have in common. You might even find the same bar tender to be hotty (after the third it's guaranteed)

we all make mistakes in judgement whether it be on the water or in a forum...how about a bit of forgiveness to go with Carl's love?. wipe the slate clean fella's and start again, we need everyone to be on the same page for our beaches to be all smiles, waves and high fives.

Picture the brady bunch....
